Today's Topic: Bridegroom’s Oak: Germany’s MatchMaker Tree
TL; DW (Too Long; Didn’t Watch)
- The Bridegroom’s Oak is a 500-year-old tree outside of Eutin, Germany.
- It has its own address to which love seekers around the world send hopeful letters.
- It has been facilitating love for over 100 years.
- In 1890, a young woman named Minna fell in love with a chocolate maker named Wilhelm.
- Of course, their love was forbidden.
- Never giving up on each other, the two kept correspondence in the knothole of an old tree (Bridegroom’s Oak).
- After a year of successful secret love, the two were caught.
- Instead of being punished, the father (of Minna) allowed the two to be married.
- Legend says they were wed on June 2, 1891, under the branches of the tree that kep their love alive.
- Rumors spread and by 1927 it was receiving regular letters from hopeful lovers and the Deutsche Post gave it its very own address:
Dodau 99, 23701 Eutin, Germany
- The tree receives about 1000 letters a year, mostly coming in the warmer summer months.
- Most importantly: Does it work???
Yes. Over 100 marriages have resulted from correspondence beginning at the tree.
