Gifts for the Garden

Earlier this week, my daughter surprised me with a gift for no special reason. She brought home two new plants for the garden however, I'm inclined to think the gifting was really more about me being the one to do the planting but whatever, on with the show...

She purchased them at a local fete and they didn't come with much in the way of growing information. The labels showed only the name of the plant and of course, the price. So to give them the best chance of survival I thought I probably should learn something about them before deciding where to plant them.

Purple Yellow-Centred Daisies, planted

#1 - Purple Yellow-Centered Daisies

  • The first plant was labelled with the above name but I've been unable to identify this particular one. There are so many varieties of 'purple yellow-centred' daisies and judging by the shape of the leaves, I'm fairly sure the ones I've come across so far are NOT the plant I have. Not to worry, I'll just have to let it grow for a while and wait for some flowers to bloom.

Salvia 'Hot Lips'

#2 - Salvia 'Hot Lips'

  • Botanical Name: Salvia microphylla Hot Lips
  • According to Plant Grower's Australia Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ is an evergreen perennial with a lengthy display of bi-colour blooms in white and lipstick red.
  • They are said to thrive with full sun to part shade in a sheltered position and will grow in most well-drained soil types.
  • They're also known to be dry tolerant and frost hardy. The latter being the most important characteristic, due to the frost we get in Canberra during the winter months.
  • There was an additional surprise waiting for me this morning when I went to plant them out into the garden. Like an extra little thank you gift, the Salvia greeted me with its first bloom which really made my day.

A Surprise Bloom

So far, so good - it seems that at least one of these plants has a fighting chance of survival (in my garden, that is!) but regardless, I'm still keeping my (somewhat) green fingers crossed while I hope for the best.
