Machu Picchu, Peru - Part 2

in #travel8 years ago

Machu Picchu, at an elevation of 2,430 metres (7,970 feet), just makes your mind boggle. Seeing this place first hand, really puts into perspective, just how little we know about how, and why, this testament to ingenuity was built. Expanding on Part 1, we now take a closer look at the buildings and surrounding structures, that make up the main "temple" complex.

So let's take a walk down the stairs, to the said complex.

MP 14.jpg

At this altitude, even a down hill walk takes the breath from you, better enabling you to experience the breathless beauty of the place.

MP 15.jpg

These guys though, have no problems, going up, or down.

MP 16.jpg

Even this local tourist guide, recognised immediately the photo opporunity presented here.

MP 17.jpg

Are we there yet?

MP 18.jpg

You don't get to see the depth of this construction, from the top view.

MP 19.jpg

Made it! Quite appreciative at this point too, for the wad of coca leaves, folded and wedged into my upper gum. A common practice in these altitudes, to alleviate altitude related stresses and to give one an overall, calm demeanour.

MP 20.jpg

Incredible!

MP 21.jpg

Notice in the above image, the two very distinctive styles of construction. Megalithic vs smaller building stones.

MP 22.jpg

The mind boggles at what this may have once been a part of.

MP 23.jpg

This structure, along with other surrounding constructions of both megalithic, and later, Incan, constructions will be covered in part 3.

MP 24.jpg

Exactly! That's what I said too.

Having now hopefully created a greater perspective, for the sheer size and wonder that is, Machu Picchu, part 3 will look closely at some of the most anomalous structures to be found here.

So, if you have enjoyed today's selection, be sure to check out my previous Peruvian travel posts, and come back next Monday to see Machu Picchu Part 3.

Peace.
