Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru - Part 1

in #architecturalphotography6 years ago (edited)

The town of Ollantaytambo

In the mountains surrounding the ancient Incan capital, Cusco, lies the town and archaeological site, Ollantaytambo. At an elevation of 2,792m (9,160 ft), the town of Ollantaytambo is where you catch the train to Machu Pichu. The town itself has quite a history in itself, but this blog will focus on the archaeological site. Incorporating the same style of monolithic, polygonal construction that is to be found all around, and within the city of Cusco, it combines the amazing architectural genius of Sacsayhuaman and the water features of Tambomachay.

Just like at Sacsayhuaman, chunks of, and intact monolithic stones lie scattered around like the aftermath of a tantrum on ones lego constructions.

Once you enter the site, the sheer magnitude of the surrounding terracing just blows your mind.

Looking across from the site, still more structures can be seen on the mountain on the other side of the town

Do you see the angry face?

How about now?

Looking down from the top

This block is as smooth as glass and has perfect right angles. Placing a set square on the corners will show a level of precision that is parallel to modern machined surfaces.

Part 2 of this blog will examine some of these monolithic blocks further, as well as focus in more detail on some of the most incredible structures on the top of this site, but for now, that's all folks :)

If you've enjoyed these photos, be sure to check out my previous posts, and check back tomorrow, for part 2.

Peace.
