Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru - Part 3

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Continuing our tour of the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo with this final instalment, we will look at a few, of the many water features at this site. The water feeding these features comes from both, natural rivers, and a complex series of artificially constructed, underground canal systems.

Sitting on the wall, in the above image, with your back to the canal, and gazing up into the opposing mountainside, some very enigmatic features can be discovered, as shown below

Not immediately discernible, a little over halfway up in the above image, a short section of stairway exists, bewildering the casual observer

Local Shamans and tourist guides alike, say that a lot of these structures are interconnected, through a complex series of tunnels, also fraught with mazes and traps to deter the "uninitiated". Many stories abound of wary travellers who have discovered, and ventured into said tunnels, never to be seen again.

Yes, yes, I know, I promised you water features ^^
So enjoy :)

and just to close off, one for the Simpsons fans, Ollantaytambo has a Kwik-E-Mart, complete with Simpsons paraphernalia.

Well, that's it for today's selection. If you've enjoyed it, please join me on Monday, each week, when I will post another photo blog of my Peruvian adventure. I mentioned in Part 1 of Ollantaytambo, that this is where you get the train to Machu Pichu. Well the train here actually goes to Aguas Calientes (tr: Hot Waters), where you can either hike, or catch a bus to, Machu Pichu. Thus, my next blog will be of Aguas Calientes.

Peace.

I enjoyed this series thank you. Those steps in the middle are strange. Though i have a much more modern version i found in Tasmania i will have to remember to show sometime.

Thanks man. Your continued support of my posts has been very encouraging for me :) It always feels good to know that someone else is enjoying your work.
Please do post that stairway if you do find it :)
Peace.

And likewise of your support on my posts is very encouraging thank you. I will endevour to find it when i get home.

I seemed to have missed this series, I will go and check the other parts out. You've got some great photos here, I find it amazing how the ancient people were able to build these things.

Cheers @gyro , and thanks for the support. I think the reason that it's so amazing to us, with our advanced technology, and striped toothpaste, is that we are clueless as to how they did it. Ancient is usually synonymous with primitive, within academia, however places like this have walls of evidence to suggest the contrary. Thanks for stopping by.
Peace.

Very exciting! I loved my trip to Peru. I look forward to Aguas Calientes!

Have you been chewing any coca leaves to help with the altitude? Make sure to use the lime ("lipta" I think) to turn the salts alkaline.

Cheers,

@dcj

Thanks @dcj , I became quite a fan of the coca leaf :) Whilst at those altitudes, I constantly had a folded wad of coca leaves jammed up between my upper lip and teeth. That way, it just mixes with your saliva and gives you a nice steady dose :) when the leaves get too dry, you just change them :)
Peace.
