Drive-by Skin(Original)
Leagues of fields that cover her hide,
Lazy rivers that trace her side,
Colors her orbit day to night,
A cool, easy turn.
She can smell you with her eyes,
Taste the noise within your sighs,
Your thoughts there on her fingertips,
If only to burn.
Ironclad in her drive-by skin
To keep herself from falling in,
Keep the world, or me, from seeking
Eager little deaths.
So in love, an eye for an eye,
Your neatly packaged gift for mine,
These presents make the earth go 'round
Wobbling uncertain.
I'm tracing lines against the sky
Primitives, shapes to help remind
Me that I am orbiting too,
Hurtling through space.
In the red, dying western lights
On early stars I trace our flight
Connecting all the universe
Under our love's rule.
Right there: our celestial house,
Big bay windows facing the south
Overlooking our everything
In these golden years.
