In The Dreaming: Chapter Fifty Nine "Hooking Up" (Fantasy Y/A Novel)

in #story5 years ago

-I wrote the following novel nearly two decades ago. In the years between then and now I've honed my craft, and my perception of this world; my thoughts and ideas; have changed dramatically. However, I still enjoy the premise and have decided to do an overhaul of revisions and rewrites, though likely not until sometime next year. (Though I'm sure I'll do a little as I post chapters)

For now I hope you will enjoy a glimpse into my book writing beginnings...

Chapter Fifty Nine

Ben was waiting outside when they pulled up and he grabbed his little brother, squeezing him tight. After the bro hug he threw his arm around Collin, “How are you doing man?”

“I’m good, Ben, looking forward to the show.”

Ben became animated then, using colorful terms to describe how fantastic it was going to be. He shook the other guys hands then looked over at the mustang and whistled. “That yours?” he asked Jake.

“No, it’s mine.” Collin patted it affectionately.

“Well done!” With that he escorted them upstairs to his humble abode. There was a group of people standing around drinking beer and he made introductions, saving his current girlfriend Kendra and her sister Kara for last.

He pulled Kendra onto his lap. “This beauty is going to be my agent out in Californ-I-A, isn’t that right?”

“I don’t know, do you think you’re good enough?” she teased.

“Kendra’s been offered a job in a talent agency out in Beverly Hills," he continued. "She leaves next week. I will be joining her at the end of the year after I finish up my commercial shoots. Her adorable sister there-” he pointed at Kara, “is going to be a famous model, isn’t that right Kar?”

She giggled, “We’ll see.” She brought a drink over to Collin and flirted shamelessly while the others mingled.

“So you go to that school, Jarien, with Ben’s brother, right?”

He nodded taking a sip of his beer. He looked her over, she was beautiful, no doubt about it.

“So you’re still kind of young, huh?”

“How old are you?” he avoided the question.

“Eighteen last week. I just graduated and I’m leaving with my sister.”

“Does it matter that I’m younger?”

She batted her eyelashes. “Not really. You’re gorgeous and brilliant, I better snatch you up now before someone else gets you.” She looped her arm through his and Ben gave him an exaggerated wink and thumbs up sign.

Jake refrained from drinking since he would be driving and Gerald refrained for other reasons, the rest of them drank it up until it was time to go.

Brent rode with his brother and Collin graciously offered the front seat to Gerald so he could share the backseat with his pretty new friend.

“Did anyone ask how we were going to get into this place?”

“I did,” Jake stated, “apparently you only have to be sixteen. Of course we won’t get any drinking bracelets, not that I’m drinking.”

“You will be later, Ben bought some Johnny Walker just for you.” Jake eyed him in the rearview to see if he was joking.

“Seriously man, he showed it to me.”

Jake nodded in appreciation. “Do you think we’ll get a poker game together later?”

“Knowing Ben.”

Gerald piped in, “At least there’s something worthwhile on the agenda.”

Kara listened to this rapport with an amused smile. She looked back and forth between Gerald and Jake then raised her eyebrows at Collin.

He laughed and shook his head, “We’re all roommates,” he explained.

“I’m surprised he drives a car like this,” she whispered, “he looks more like a Cadillac guy.”

Collin laughed out loud. “Rolls Royce actually. This is my car.”

She looked impressed and moved a little closer to him.

It was only a ten minute drive before they were clamoring out of their cars. They had quite a crew, seven cars total. Three of which had met them in the driveway before they left.

Ben grabbed Collin by the shoulder, “Come in with me, I’ll get you two a bracelet. I know most of the people that work here.”

He walked in behind Ben and Brent, Kara holding onto his hand and after Ben spoke quietly to the guy at the door he was handed two bracelets and shooed in.

There was an opening band already on stage and they were rocking the house. They went to the bar and ordered some drinks, then pushed their way closer to the front. The music was of the grassroots variety and if you didn’t dance you were one of the few people in the room. Probably a total of ten, Jake and Gerald included.

They were on for forty-five minutes before Stills came out to a loud roar and applause.

The lead singer simply said “Thank you,” into the microphone than started playing.

Three songs in Ben danced over to Collin. “So, what do you think?” He shouted.

“I love them!”

“I thought you would! Do you need another beer?”

Collin nodded and they headed to the bar.

“So, you like Kara huh?” Ben asked. He made a lewd gesture and laughed.

“She’s a knockout, I’ll say that much.”

“She really likes you, she’s been hanging all over you since you got here.”

Collin nodded.

“So, you gonna get lucky tonight or what?” He put his hand up for a high five and Collin obliged.

They headed back over with their beers and danced for the next two hours, taking breaks only to replace their drained drinks.

It ended and the lights came on- people were milling around, reluctant to leave.

“So what’s next? Party at your place?” Collin asked.

“You know it, let me round the troops and we’ll get outta here.”

On the way back to Ben’s Kara slid into Collin’s lap. They made out for the full ten minutes then exited the car oblivious of the disapproving looks from the boys up front.

Once back inside they played a few games of poker, Collin actually taking one followed by Jake then Ben. Other people wanted to play some drinking games so they put the chips aside and started two tables of the classic game of beer drinkers everywhere-Asshole.

At three-thirty in the morning they finally put the cards away and settled back to talk sports, politics, philosophy and whatever else came to mind.

Kara tugged on Collin’s arm. “Hey,” she whispered. “Ben said you and I could take the bedroom in the back.”

Collin looked her over through his drunken haze and smiled. He excused himself from his current company and let her lead him into the room. H
