In The Dreaming: Chapter Twelve "A Stolen Kiss" (Fantasy Y/A Novel)

-I wrote the following novel nearly two decades ago. In the years between then and now I've honed my craft, and my perception of this world; my thoughts and ideas; have changed dramatically. However, I still enjoy the premise and have decided to do an overhaul of revisions and rewrites, though likely not until sometime next year. (Though I'm sure I'll do a little as I post chapters)

For now I hope you will enjoy a glimpse into my book writing beginnings...

They are the closest of friends though they have never met in waking life.

Chapter Twelve

The group pulled their chairs closer to the fire as the temperature began to drop along with the sun, Dave boldly moving his chair next to Aliyah’s.

“Okay, what are we going to do first? I say scary stories need to wait until the witching hour.” Misty was a girl who did not like to be bored.

“I vote for jailbreak.”

“Oh yeah,” John brightened up at this suggestion.

“How exactly do we play that?” Misty asked.

“It’s simple. We divide into teams of three, and one team hides while the other counts. We need a jail-the fallen log over there will work-then as soon as all members of the hiding team are caught we switch. You can get your teammates out of jail by tagging them. Plus we need boundaries- hmmm. Maybe it would be better for us to play in the yard, I don’t know how to make boundaries out here.”

They trooped back to Aliyah’s back yard and she continued. “Okay, the only part of the woods we can hide in is from there to there,” she pointed moving her arm from right to left, “and as far back as the field, but not in the field. Then the edge of the woods on every other side.”

“Alrighty then, let’s make teams.. Amy, Aliyah, with me?” Dave asked nonchalantly.

“Sounds good. Who hides first?”

“Since you guys got to make the teams, I say we do,” Misty said.

“Fair enough, uhh, where’s the jail?” Dave looked around.

“Oh yeah-the picnic table.” The three headed over and hopped on to count while the others took off in separate directions.

“1-2-3...” They counted loudly to 50 then yelled ready or not and headed out to find them.

With only three of them hiding in such a big yard it proved harder than they thought. They were used to playing it with a lot of people. After about a half hour they called the remaining two out-John and Misty-to suggest regular hide and seek instead.

“Aww, this game is better.”

“Usually it is John, but there’s not enough of us, we need at least 4 or 5 each team otherwise it takes forever.”

“Okay, who’s 'IT' then?”

“I nominate Janie since she was the only one who got caught.” Misty pointed out.

“Gee thanks Misty. All right, but I’m coming for you.”

The group took off, Aliyah and Dave headed for the woods.

Aliyah had found herself a comfortable nook in a tree when she felt a tug on her arm. Dave had found discovered her little cave twenty yards to the left and was motioning for her to join him.

She bit her lip, the idea of hiding somewhere so close to him made her heart speed up a bit.

She took a deep breath and crept over to him. “If they find us, they are definitely going to give us a hard time about this.” She whispered.

He shrugged his shoulders and whispered back, “It’s a strategy- if we get caught we run in different directions and head for home base.”

“I see.” She felt a pressure on her leg, and realized he had rested his hand on it. She didn’t think it was possible for her heart to gallop any harder without leaping out of her chest.

They crouched there silently for a few minutes, then Dave put his finger on his lips and ventured out to look. They heard some whoops as Janie discovered John and he made a break for it.

He crawled back in next to her. “He made it.”

Aliyah smiled, hoping he would put his hand back on her leg.

Apparently the fact that she hadn’t moved his hand emboldened him, because the next thing she knew he had put his hand inside her hair and pulled her face towards his. He was going to kiss her! He closed his eyes and put his lips on hers softly, then just as
abruptly he popped out of the cave and made a run for the base.

Aliyah sat there stunned, still feeling his lips on hers. It had been so fast though, she suddenly wanted him to really kiss her. Oh boy, take it easy girl, she reprimanded herself, You are 14 years old, and your parents would kill you. The wisdom of that couldn’t stop the images of him kissing her longer and harder though, so she pushed all thoughts away and broke free of the cave herself.

Dave had made it on base, and she saw Janie across the yard trying to run down Amy. She sprinted as hard as she could and fell on the picnic table out of breath.

She avoided looking at Dave, afraid of alerting the whole group to what had happened in the woods.
