Pros and Cons of Homework at My School
Is homework important for students? My colleagues have different opinions on this matter. We debated whether or not the homework should be done by the students here.
Some teachers argue that homework is important for students. They reasoned that homework could help students to complete the exercises given by teachers in the classroom. You need to know, in the classroom, the average teacher spends about 80 minutes for each lesson. Teachers feel that time very little. They should be able to divide the time to explain the subject matter, answer any questions students who have not understood the subject matter, and examine each student's work. Usually, if the 80 minute time has ended, and the student has not completed the task, then the task can be continued by the students in their homes.
Other teachers have suggested that homework can help students to take their time. You should also know, the average student here lazy to study at home respectively. They spend more time playing, either playing games or playing on the field. Students here also prefer watching television rather than studying. So, by giving homework to students can encourage their learning interest and take time to focus on the lesson.
Other opinions also need to be considered. Every homework should also involve their parents or their brothers. Students will be asked to parents about the problems they can not answer. They assume that their parents or siblings are the ones who know better the answers to their homework questions.
I compare the opinions above with the references I get. In the site blog.eskool.ca mentioned that, here are some reasons why homework is important:
It improves child’s thinking and memory; It helps child develop positive study skills and habits that will serve him or her well throughout life; Homework encourages child to use time wisely; It teaches child to work independently; Homework teaches child to take responsibility for his or her work; It allows child to review and practice what has been covered in class; It helps child to get ready for the next day’s class; Homework helps child learn to use resources, such as libraries, reference materials, and computer web sites to find information; It encourages child to explores subjects more fully than classroom time permits; It allows child to extend learning by applying skills to new situations; It helps child integrate learning by applying many different skills to a single task, such as book reports or science projects; Howework helps parents learn more about what child is learning in school; It allows parents to communicate about what he or she is learning; and It encourages parents to spark child’s enthusiasm.
However, there are some teachers who do not give homework to their students. There are several reasons that I summarize here. Homework can burden the students. Children should have a portion of time to play more than learn. Giving homework academic to students will make them bored. This will form the doctrine in their minds to hate school. "Why do we school! There's always homework," they reasoned.
Other teachers argue that academic tasks must be completed in the classroom. Teachers must guide them in solving problems. Bringing home the subject matter to home will have a negative impact on their psychology.
Other opinions may make more sense to me. You need to know, our students here are dominated by lazy students rather than diligent students. Lazy students never finish their homework. They just copy the homework in class the next day. The homework is copied from the work of diligent students. So do not be surprised, if teachers check the results of their work will find the same answer.
PR also have an impact on their parents. Some parents are not able to answer questions from homework. Of course, not all parents are able to master a particular field of knowledge. For example math, not all parents master mathematics.
I am looking for some other reason why homework should not be given to students. Please read this source:
- Kids already have seven hours of school
- It’s counterintuitive to make children spend too many hours studying
- Getting sun and exercise is crucial for your health
- Seven hours of school should be enough to learn anything
- Having a social and family life is important
The pros and cons between us happen because it has a different point of view. I am a pro on this issue. What is your opinion? Please comment!
Warm Regards,
@teukumukhlis

The big difference is between input and output tasks for pupils. Input tasks means that the task (eg. a homework) just has to be done like learning vocabulary or reading a book. Either you do them or not, there is no middleground. Output tasks on the other hand are about the result and even if pupils do the task, they can still fail. An example would be to write a poem that rhymes, where some can be subjectively better than others.
Research shows that pupils are much better with input tasks with an objective result than interpretable output tasks. If you let them only do input tasks, you will get better results (I am referring to Ronald Fryers work), which should also count for homework.
Maybe giving them a candy or a Euro for having done the homework works and if I was a teacher, I would make them use a camera while doing the homework as proof of not cheating.
Also: Give the good pupils a day off. I never understood why you don't get a day off as a reward when having an (objectively measurable) A grade plus also one day off for two B's.
I was notoriously lazy and stubborn because I didn't see the sense in getting up in the middle of the night just to go to a place to do things that I don't want to do. But with that incentive, I would have done anything to get away from it as often as possible.
Thank you for your opinion. I include teachers who give homework to students. Sometimes, I give them the task of memorizing some vocabulary (Arabic). Sometimes, they write a few paragraphs.
Regarding holidays, I can not provide that. Except, dismiss them from homework. I have 8 classes. Each class, I meet with my students twice a week (that's about 120 minutes).
In some points I agree with your opinion.
Our current education system doesn't really teach students critical thinking it's more like read and repeat...
We are just a system tool. We repeatedly fought the system, but we lost. We are not Freire.
But, I tried to adopt his thinking, and that was being applied slowly.
What Teachers Say :
On the teachers' side, we think that it allows the child to see again in the evening what he learned during the day and that it helps him to memorize. It also allows you to train a little more than in class, and especially in another context.
