Hi, Steemian educators!

I am a teacher who teaches Arabic at a junior high school in Lhokseumawe. On this occasion, I will share about the method of reading in Arabic.

In Arabic, reading is one of the skills that must be mastered. The ability to read is one of the most important language skills, without reading a person's life will be static and not developing. Likewise with the ability to read foreign languages.

The method of reading (qiraah) is a way of presenting the lesson by reading both reading by voice and reading silently. Through this method is expected the students can pronounce words and sentences in Arabic fluently and correctly according to the rules that have been determined.

The characteristics of reading methods in learning Arabic include:
a. Fluent pronunciation by sounding letters according to makhraj
b. The sounds of various sounds according to the letters and words and sentences
c. Midway between fast and slow and between high sound and low sound
d. Current reading, not repeating the word and not cutting off words that can ruin the meaning
e. Noting the short length readings.

In reading learning there are several theories and methods that appear and develop, including:

  1. The Harfiyyah Method; the teacher starts the lesson by teaching the hijaiyyah letters one by one. Students are slow in reading, because students tend to read letters per letter rather than reading the unity of words.
  2. The Sautiyyah Method; this instructional sequence begins by teaching the letter fathah ( َ ) and so on, then dhammmah ( ُ ) letters, then the letters of kasrah ( ِ ) and sukun ( ْ ). After that then switch to the lesson of fathatani tanwin ( ً ٌ ٍ ).
  3. The Syllable Method; In this method students first learn the syllables, then learn the word is composed of the syllable. To teach syllables must be preceded by learning the letter mad.
  4. The Word Method; this method of the word assumes that the student knows the common things first, then develops the parts of the common.
  5. The Sentence Method; the learning procedure of reading by this method is by the teacher first showing a short sentence on the card or on the board, then reading the sentence several times and followed by the student.
  6. The Combined Method; this method combines harfiyyah method, sautiyyah, syllable, word method, sentence method.

The learning steps of this reading method can be adjusted. For example, the lesson starts with giving vocabulary and difficult terms and explanations of meaning with definitions and examples in the sentence. Students read the text in silence for approximately 25 minutes. Discussion of reading contents that may be questionable by using the mother tongue of the student. Furthermore, teachers can also discuss about grammar briefly if deemed necessary.

Thus are some of the reading methods I have applied to my students. May be useful.
