Educate Students Through National Independence Day Activities
What educational value obtained from Independence Day? I think that the value gained here is a sense of nationalism. Students must know how a freedom means. Students can feel how the struggle of the heroes who died in the battlefield. The war heroes are united to expel the invaders from Indonesia.
In addition, the anniversary of independence also educates students to respect each other. Independence Day can also inspire children to participate in government development programs. They can not be directly involved in these programs, but children are the future assets of a nation.
Independence Day also educates children to be sporty. In Indonesia, every anniversary of independence is always filled with various competitions. Competitions are still referring to the theme of nationality. This positive activity is also one way for students to fill the day of independence.
The other educational value obtained here is to love the culture of the nation. Indonesia is an archipelagic country that has cultural diversity. Each province has its own culture. Independence Day is one good way to introduce the culture of each province to the students. Every day of independence, all stakeholders participate to follow the cultural carnival. In my area, the cultural carnival will be held tomorrow morning, on August 19, 2017. This cultural carnival will involve all school students displaying 34 traditional customs of the province in Indonesia.
What other meaning of independence day for students? Another important meaning that students get is to encourage them to keep fighting. Students did not take part in the struggle against the invaders, but the students have to fight against ignorance. The way to fight ignorance is to learn.
Then, what I and my students do in the Independence Day this year? One of the activities that we conduct is a cake decorating contest of independence. Here are some of my students' work.
