School Literacy Movement in Indonesia

Interest in reading students in Indonesia is generally very low. Based on the "Most Littered Nation in the World" study conducted by Central Connecticut State Univesity in March 2016, Indonesia was ranked 60th of 61 countries on reading interest. Meanwhile, based on a UNESCO survey, the interest of Indonesians to read is only 0.001 percent. That is, in a thousand people there is only one society that has interest in reading. These figures are very alarming.

From the problem, the government has launched the program "School Literacy Movement". Regulation of the program is based on The Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 23 of 2015 provides a focal point for basic education in Indonesia to explicitly implement and foster the values of character since students' orientation to their graduation.

The school literacy program invites students to read all kinds of books for 15 minutes before the lesson begins. Each student is required to bring any book to school, whether in the form of a fiction book or general knowledge book. But, more fiction books I suggest to develop students' imagination.

There are several goals in school literacy, which are:

  1. Cultivating a culture of literacy in school
  2. Increasing the capacity of citizens and the environment of the school in order to be literate
  3. Making the school as a fun and child-friendly learning park so that the school residents are able to manage their knowledge
  4. Maintaining the continuity of learning by presenting various books and accommodating a variety of reading strategies.

If school literacy continues to be developed on a daily basis, it will shape the reading environment in children. Locke stated that a child was born as a blank paper. Hence, that the empty paper can be filled with writings derived from a child's learning and experience. Therefore, Locke's development theory described that a child will be affected by his environment. The same thing is also expressed in this source, Locke believed the human mind was what he called a "tabula rasa," which is Latin for "clean sheet of paper." He believed infants know nothing when they are born, and that all the ideas humans develop come from experience.

We hope that the literacy movement of schools in Indonesia can increase students' reading interest and characterize children.

Actually it's bad news. Hahaha. Thank you.

@originalworks

Education is a challenge all over the world. It seems like its a double edged sword, the learner who does not want to learn, and the institution which doesnt want to put the proper teaching methodologies in place

I am getting very surprised by Indonesia was ranked 60th of 61 countries on reading interest. that is very poor rating specially with child education. Government should take the actions but i think most of the community should do the awareness for this .

Right! All parties should pay attention to this issue. Especially parents and teachers at school. In addition, community leaders and government also have an important role here. I as a teacher always remind my students to read.

We can star to change it by promoting reading is the best way to gain knowledge to our children..I think our government have to work hard to make the educator sure that to promote reading to all students is a must! Thanks for sharing me this useful.post. regard

I agree. I think the school literacy movement is a right choice. However, the practice may be somewhat different. Therefore, we must work hard to remind our young generation to love reading.

it is very important to fill a child's empty paper with inspiring works. Great post
