I Will Share Some of the Things that I Learned ...
For Reference: Evolved08gsr's SteemSQL Analysis - Post #001 - Working to Identify and Eradicate Spam Accounts
Note: The results listed below are limited to Comments Posted Since June 1, 2017.
Lesson #1:
- There are SO MANY BOTS on Steemit!
The results from my queries have uncovered countless bots. Some of the bots are "harmless", mostly welcoming people to Steemit.
Let's take a quick look at this one..

![](https://IMG1.STEEMIT.COM/215X100/https://steemitimages.com/DQmdUMcJG8T6XTq7ARoXRNixdbX6kPjJqaKHv4DibCfuqBP/image.png)
This account has some recent, seemingly-human comments, followed by a plethora of: "I am a bot..." comments .. and this freaking bot has a higher reputation than me! (I'm at 48 at the time of this post):
![](https://img1.steemit.com/475x323/https://steemitimages.com/DQmW9bHbxruZ9orRdXoeCmxjHGeL3LGA4oZ5Wf8G5mnaKwn/image.png)
Oh, and here's another fun one.. a bot trying to scam people and effectively diminish the Rewards Pool:

![](https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://steemitimages.com/DQmei1VjWxb7fTkKjb5biZ91SJPFvNYsYG9zvuaBANAcMzA/image.png)
If you look closely, this bot even managed to get a reputation of 44!! It also started getting flagged, but only after it gained a sizable reputation. This bot is also cashing out (powering down)..

Potential Solution For #1:
- Prevent bots from taking over Steemit by removing them from the Rewards Pool.
If you set up a bot, I would offer that you are not allowed to contribute to, or be rewarded from, the Rewards Pool.
Said in another way: The Bot can't upvote or be upvoted! And here is why:
- Bots are not people.
- Bots are not "adding value" by being in the community.
- No, Even if you're "supporting minnows" with the bot, You're not contributing to the community.
- By "supporting minnows" with the bot, You're now Creating A New Problem which shouldn't exist. New Users believe that it's easy to get upvotes just from posting in the [introduceyourself] section.
- If you built the bot to "Help the Community", then you should have no problem with not taking any rewards for it.
- If you built the bot to "Make Money", then you don't understand the idea behind Steemit and you can, respectfully, leave the community and please take your bot with you.
Lesson #2:
- I don't have nearly enough time to spend working through this process alone.
I really want to see this project through, but considering every time that I run my analysis I need to then Manually comb through each of the results to review the Potential Spam Account list, I just can't dedicate enough of my time here. If anyone wants to talk through the process that I have taken already and build from my query, I am happy to share the SQL code and let you take over.
With that said, I would continue to offer my assistance from the strategic side (how to get fewer false positives and/or false negatives).
Potential Solution For #2:
- If you want to take over where I left off in my code, Please post a comment below and I'll share it with you. The reason I'm not simply posting the logic here is because I don't want those who create the bots to easily identify the logic I'm using in my query and create work-arounds in their bots so they're not caught by the query.
Sounds a bit paranoid, I know .. but that's just my nature. Trust, but verify!
Lesson #3:
- Feel free to review these results from my latest query. I filtered this list on results with fewer than 10 unique repeated comments.
Potential Solution For #3:
- The potential solution is in your hands ...

Lesson #4:
- There are so many other interesting analyses that I want to do, specifically related to the distribution of the Rewards Pool since HF 0.19.0 was rolled out.
I'm not sure if others have noticed, but I see that the overall rewards pool seems to have dropped significantly, outside of the whale realm. (Maybe even for whales too?).
Potential Solution For #4:

welcome Evolved08gsr to Steemit !! . I hope you enjoy your time here, its a great community :) Nice post, i will follow your account, please follow me at @khunpoom
Well played... well played.
Haha, Thank you. I figured it was worth mentioning, since that account was on my list!
A seemingly 'human comment' caught, we can now decide to reward it or not....most likely NOT.
Now if we could have a bot that compares comments all across Steemit, and then posts like you did here, then the spam WILL DIE OFF without rewards.
Nice catch, great post.
Thank you for your comment and for reading my post.
It's quite unfortunate that the bots are receiving more of the rewards pool than humans ... but maybe one day soon value will go back to us humans!
We can but hope. I hope you don't mind aliens also getting some upvotes, I'm not a bot....I'm just an alien sent here many years ago to study humans for a special secret purpose.
lol why the fuck is my name on this list?
