Mini Motivation #70 - Have you ever got woken up by panic attacks?

Some nights you don't wake up because of a shocking sound or sudden movement, nor by the need to empty your bladder or the chimes of your alarm clock. You just sprang out of bed, breath quicken, heart pacing, and your palms could be sweaty.

No, it's no nightmare, because bad dreams leave you after a while. And with bad dreams, you can even go back to sleep still.

But if you wake up with a panic, or anxiety attack, the fear hardly leaves you, at least for long enough to rob you of your sleep. Even when you try to return to your sleep, the thoughts will stir you awake, fist clenched, more sighs than breath.

So, have your experience those sudden attacks?

I do. As a matter of fact, I got them often. Still do, actually. Either due to financial problems, or over commitment of work. Recently, it has been the latter. The sense of uncertainty just stressed me up, tighten my chest, hijacking the function otherwise fulfilled by the alarm clock.

So far, the way I found most effective to beat it, is to review my plan, or to make one if one is absent. Taking out the calendar and carving proper time slots in them helps a lot. It gives me some form of certainty knowing that there's a startegy to end it all, and to put my mind at ease.

Someone once told me that while fear is in the absence of courage, stress is in the absence of strategy. When you do not know how to solve a problem, you get stressed out. That happened. However, the moment you find a solution, or someone recommended you one, do you realise that despite not executing the strategy yet, your mind is a lot peaceful and calm? You have the map, and even without taking the first step, you will in fact feel a lot better.

Such is the nature if the mind.

Wait, why's Mav posting on Steemit nowadays?

The underlying problem for me is I procrastinate a lot. I am well aware time is not limitless for me, yet I waste away it as if it was here forever. Probably was spoiled when I was a kid and being raised by my parents to take it easy.

There is nothing worse than to stress out because I do not have enough time to complete the task. It makes everything I do worse when I am stress. Thanks for making some recommendations to coping with stress.

Yeah, procrastination can be a real pain sometimes. It's self-inflicting, really, and a bad habit too.

I find Mel Robbins' 5 second rule useful to beat procrastination -

Dude, I gotta tell you, your content is honestly amazing. Really love the way you write and also the things you focus on. I started getting panic attacks a few years ago and when they take me over it's pretty drastic. I have found the only things which help are breathing techniques and immediately cutting out any caffeine until they pass. It makes me feel pathetic and totally consumed. Not a nice feeling, but hey. It happens to the best of us!

Caffeine, huh? I never knew they could cause panic attacks, but after thinking for a while, it kinda makes sense. It just makes the heart race faster. Although some would argue that will propel them into action!

Yeah I know right!? It makes me super jittery though, especially if i'm already feeling anxious.

To answer your question.. when I get an anxiety attack, i'll lose my eyes,take a few slow deeeep breaths through my nose and take double the time to let the air out through my mouth and be very aware of my breathing ; same time remind myself to be in the present, NOW and not think o tomorrow or the future. So as of NOW, living the moment, everything is fine, nothing to free and remind myself only to cross the bridge when i reach it.

It also helps to remember there is God watching our back and taking care of all His Creation as He does with the birds and animals in the wild.. they all somehow have enough to eat each day.

Be atill and know He is God.

Focus on the present, that's a good practice, @patlu. There are no emotions in the present, only focus and clarity.

I know how you feel, I've had anxiety attacks too. Always had it during the final stage of a project that I am doing, I always feels like quitting when its getting tougher. It drains you even in your sleep, so I always had a pretty rough night when I tried to have a rest.

I feel for you, bro. Sometimes we just wish that it can be avoided.

I've had little experience with panicking out of the blue but wow this sounds serious, to the point it could actually hinder your sleep?, I don't think I'd want to be in that position.

Sometimes Im going to bed after long and difficult day with 4-5h/24 sleep and in the moment when Im ready to get in deep rest suddenly I wake up and it starts this crazy "battle' with the thoughts,fear ,panic and all of this what you descripe above.
When Im close to loose my mind I press myself to calm down.I realise that people who pass this " red line ' are getting mad,become schizophrenic and I say to myself : No !!! Im strong I have to calm down whatever happen my psychical health is more important so let the problems fly away....

It's good that you're still consciously settling yourself down and is aware of the red line. I hope you manage to hold yourself at bay and not cross the line.

I suppose everyone would experience their own form of anxiety attack one time or another. It's true that today's society has grown to be increasingly stressful. I'm glad you figured out a way to lighten your load, I find that talking to someone you love and trust would also help ease the soul. Friends are definitely helpful, but I especially find a phone call home to be extremely therapeutic. When I get too overwhelmed, though I know many of us would feel like we don't want to burden our parents, believe it or not most of the time they are the ones giving us sound advice and different perspective on our problems. At times not talking about our issues and just calling home to listen to their voices calms us and that itself helps too. Bless you, may your heart and mind find rest in everything you do 😊

Hey, thanks for sharing your way of coping with stress. Yes, agree that talking it out really helps, and I guess when you share your personal issues with your loved ones, the bond and connection improves.

I used to have anxiety attacks quite often last time, lucky for me that the attack is getting lesser since I've learn to accept imperfection. I stopped worrying too much about the future, and everything will turn out just fine. When the stress is going away, surprisingly, i can perform even better. Bad stress is really hindering my performance. Am glad that you found your way of handling the stress.

Sometimes stress did put me into action! Still do! I guess if you can have a playful relationship with stress, you can make it work for you, instead of against you.

ya, agree with u, stress makes me more hardworking. I need to find a balance between stress and motivation.

Stress can work both ways - at one end, it keeps us on our feet. On the other, it can psychologically and mentally drain us.
