Wilderness Winter Hiking & Pine Needle Tea 📷

in #photography7 years ago

I love my weekends out in the wilderness and yesterday I was fortunately to have above freezing temperatures so I took advantage of the day and got some winter hiking in with some friends. And as usual, I've capture some moments along the route.

This was our route along a ridge line up to a small mountain called, Mesa Butte.

A view out to the south across the foothilles and the front range to the right, just out of view.

Some nice views from the Butte up there, and old downed trees I thought would frame the shot nicely.

This tree has some serious damage and sapping out regions, which made a nice shot with out campfire lunch in behind.

Ahh, heating up and melting my pastromy cheese bun for lunch. Always love a hot lunch in the woods, so great!

And with some young pines around, I made some refreshing and healthy pine needle tea for all of us. Even though it was pretty warm out, a hot drink is sure great to enjoy when stopping for lunch!

Heading back down off the Butte, some big views all around us.

Loved this one, as it shows our pathway up along the ridge nicely and the mountains in behind.

Pine Needle Tea? How interesting! Do you happen to know what health benefits it has? Now I want to go out in the woods and find a pine tree so I can try it! Wait... it's 36 degrees out there 😕😊... so how does it taste?

@bitsy, it tastes great actually and even better than that, its extremely good for you. VERY HIGH vitamin C and A, among some other benefits. Its easy to make, just collect some needles off new growth areas (they have the most flavor) and boil some water with them in it. I usually pack about a cup of needles into 2-3cups of water and boil it for a minute. Longer makes it stronger. Takes great, and if you like the smell of a christmas tree farm or pine tree forest, you will love the tea!

Spruce needle tea is good too, a bit stronger and I prefer the flavor or the pine needles myself.

Nice! Yep, I like to nibble on the ends of pine needles, or chop them very fine for tea!
