NSAS Idea Suggestion #14 - Is Bread Certain Death?

in #nsas6 years ago

In this series I propose daily ideas for new members who are interested in becoming #steemstem authors.

NSAS: New STEM Authors Support

I will post an idea a dayish (it is the goal to post daily, but again real life>steemit for now). With this idea I will include a short description about aspects you may be interested in. If you read this idea proposal, and you like it, and you want to write about it:

Go to the comments and write: "I, username, claim this idea"

Obviously "username" is where you write your own username. This is so that I know who is interested in @steemstem and science in general and I am always looking for a good read. This is honor system stuff, so please respect someone claiming an idea. Again, this is just the first step towards writing a good science post. There is more to it. Do your research, use scientific sources and try to use some proper language and attractive design.
This series will have their own hashtag #nsas, so that you can go back and sort through some of the ideas I have shared and what people made out of it. If you decide to use the idea I propose, please also include #nsas on your posts so that I can have a look at it and maybe get you connected in the steemstem group.
Please also visit @steemstem on steemit as well as on Discord. Follow the guidelines and appreciate the community. That means engage, upvote and comment until your fingers bleed.

Is bread death? If you recently saw one of these consumer advice TV shows yes. I saw one and the reporters were very upset about enzymes in their bread. ENZYMES?? How could you?
Even the Nobel price nominated science show Southpark claimes that bread is dangerous because it contains gluten, which can make your dick fly off (jk by the way).
This post could be a casual science, as well as a debunk post. You could look into ingredients commonly found in bread in the area of the world where you come from and compare that to bread from other countries (for example German bread versus fluffy American bread). Then you could give a little break down of the role of enzymes in bread productions. You should also explain what enzymes are, because it seems that most people have no idea what they are and what they do.
Gluten is probably one of the biggest nutrition topics these days. Quite frankly, I have not looked into research yet, but you hear two different stories: it kills you, or it does not affect you. I doubt that gluten is as dangerous as people think - otherwise humans would have gone extinct once agriculture started.
Other interesting aspects could be nutritional value of bread and you could also talk about the contribution of the standard additions we make, say cold cuts and jam.
I am convinced that you can cook up a pretty nice post about bread because it is not as boring as it may seem. This would also be a fantastic casual science topic because everybody has eaten bread in their life at least once.
Here are four non-scientific posts to get you started:

  • White Bread May Not Be Bad for You After All - Link
  • Is it really worth not eating bread, pasta and other carbs? - Link

Do only use these sources to learn about public perception of bread, not for scientific argument.
