When we talk about career path, we refer to the series of jobs a person is willing to engage in all in a bid to get to his ultimate career goal.

A quick example is, if you are hoping to work in a big corporation like a staff in a tertiary institution, you might want to first go for an intern job in a similar but lesser organization in other to increase your chances of getting the job.

The relationship of defining your career path with Employability in this 21st century is that knowing your career path helps you to focus on the skills needed to get to your goal.

When seeking to define your career path, there are 3 questions you need to ask;

  1. Which career path do I want to take?
  2. What does success in this mean for me as an individual?

When you've been able to answer the two questions above, you can then move on to answering the 3rd question;

3. What skills are needed in the career of my interest?

Now, remember in defining your career path, lots of things are involved including:

  1. Your personality: Are you the outgoing type or the introverted type? It's obvious an introverted individual may not do well in a sales job.

  2. Your Values: What are the things you consider as code of conduct or better still, how far are you willing to go? A doctor may have to refuse treatment if deposit isn't made by the patient.

  3. Your Interests: What are your passions? We all know that without passion, you won't go far or stand your ground when the going isn't rosy.

  4. Opportunities: Are you going for a career which is fast becoming redundant or outdated? The world is fast growing so you should focus on a career with good futuristic Outlook.

  5. Skills required: Talking of skills here, we are focusing on hard skills now. Some hard skills require about 4-5 years training while some soft skills can be gained in an hour online training.

  6. Circumstances: What is your current disposition, financially, physically or otherwise. A good example would be an individual who may want a career in basketball but is very short.

  7. Rewards: We all need a sense of reward every now and then to feel appreciated and encouraged.

Remember that a career path doesn't have to be straightforward. It sometimes involves a lot of mistakes and errors.
