The reason why we will be talking about values/conflict today is because people have different values and when a persons value is stepped upon, conflict tend to rise.

As a leader, do you change your values to make your followers happy? Do you neglect your followers values and enforce yours on them? Do you compromise your values for peace?

I hope these questions will be answered at the end of this post. First let's define terms...

Oxford Dictionary sees Values as principles or standards of behaviour; one's judgement of what is important in life. It sees Conflict as A clash or disagreement, often violent, between two or more opposing groups or individuals.

Important to note is that conflict must not always be violent, it could just be a disagreement. So putting this together, we can say that Value Conflict is a disagreement over what standards are important in dicision making.

This conflict happens when a person make decision that are guided by their values, and someone else thinks they made a bad decision.

As a leader, first you should understand that people's values are shaped by their life experiences.

You should rise above that myopic sentiment and embrace what is called Ethical values. These ethical values includes Trust, Honesty, Integrity, Authenticity, Respect etc.

You are the leader and you have people you lead. You lead them for a reason. This doesn't mean they have no voice or opinion but at some point they just have to trust your judgement.

When you embody these Ethical values, not just theorically but practically, then it becomes easier to follow and accept your judgement even when it's against their own values.

The key to avoid Value Conflict as a leader here is to be sure you don't lead by your personal values shaped by your own experiences but by these ethical values.
