Old Abandoned Prison Cells on Ilha Grande Island
Hi I'm Danny! I'm travelling around the world! Follow my posts.
After our adventures in Rio de Janeiro we headed south down the coast for a couple hours to the idyllic island of Ilha Grande.
We stayed at a really cool hostel on the edge of Abraao Beach which is the only populated beach on the island.
The first thing that strikes you is how rustic the island is. There are no roads or cars, and electricity is intermittent. The island is covered in sub tropical rainforest, and dotted with incredible beaches.
Coming across on the boat we'd heard that the island used to be a prison for political and violent offenders. We found the ruins of the old prison cells while exploring the island.
On the second day we headed over to Lopes Mendes beach which is one of the best spots on the island to relax. There are miles and miles of white sand, warm waters and cold beers.
On the way back a friendly local approached our boat in his canoe offering us fresh coconuts.
As well as beautiful beaches there are also plenty of waterfalls and fresh water pools that you can swim in. We spent an afternoon here diving off of the rocks.

I can feel the chilled out vibe of that island just looking at the first photo. I would imagine going from the bustle of Rio to the quietude of Ilha Grande, was a big change in pace.
Rio is an amazing city which I love, but after 2 weeks in Ilha Grande it took me a long time to adapt to living back in Rio. So yeah, the change in pace was massive, but most noticeable when I went back from the quiet into the big city again. Thanks for following my posts!
