NBA 2K18 Review - Forget Pastor

Now that the new NBA season is coming to a great extent, it will be high time for the new part in the best basketball gaming franchise: NBA 2K18 . To 2K the clean task to improve the almost perfect 2K17 . And it worked . Want to know why? Then read my NBA 2K18 review!

Immediately with the door at home: NBA 2K18 is an extremely strong basketball and sports game. This is because 2K has a lot of things very good, and has improved some bad points last year. For example, Draft Mode has been introduced in MyTeam, and the MyTeam is more extensive than ever. But we start with the biggest plus of NBA 2K18 : the MyCareer.

The Neighborhood lets you do what you want

New this year in MyCareer is an unprecedented freedom. Besides playing the games, you have a whole city at your disposal. In "The Neighborhood", as the city is called, you can walk around to work out at the gym, shop for clothes at the NBA store, Footlocker store or SWAG store, can you designate all the haircuts of the world and go so on. This is unprecedented for a sports game but we are absolutely out of it.

Then the story and the cutscenes. Again, Visual Concepts made a true party. Your character, titled DJ, was a massive basketball talent at the university until he decided, you already recommend his interest in the music.

He comes back from a cold fair: he can produce basketball much better than music. He is heading for a training camp of an NBA team to be chosen by yourself, and the honorable task of making a Hall of Fame-worthy career. This is under the guidance of numerous cutscenes and choices that you must make that impact your game, image and relationship with your teammates.

In NBA 2K18, the play style you play can be greatly improved. In NBA 2K17 you could choose from one Archetype, but in NBA 2K18 there are two. For example, can you defend and want to shoot? Then you can. This way you can find endless things about what game style suits you best and how you handle it in the Arctic types.

And if you're done with the off-line part of the MyCareer, you can still enjoy yourself in The Park, the street basketball, Pro-Am, the same as The Park, but in a room with official rules or chill with friends in your MyCourt. In other words: enough to do.

Gameplay shows strong improvements ...

The gameplay has undergone significant improvements over previous years. Especially the shots and layups have been working, and the progress that has been made makes the game a lot more fun. The dribble moves have remained untouched and that's all right: they are still working and you really feel the difference between, for example, Kyrie Irving and Demarcus Cousins.

Hand in hand with the changes you noticed when dribbling are the body scans of players. Kevin Durant is now finally a piece of skinnyer than Lebron James, making the mutual match a lot more interesting. Graphically, the game is a gem: all faces of players and coaches from the NBA are enormously realistic, from both superstars and James Harden to lesser gods like Shaun Livingston and Maurice Harkless. Here FIFA could suck a little more!

The shots have made a significant change. Not so much the shot itself, but the outcome. If you let a completely released Steph Curry shoot, he 'll swish nine of the ten times through the grid. This also applies to teammates Thompson and Durant, but also to other sharpshooters like Devin Booker, Isaiah Thomas and Kyle Korver. This is in stark contrast to previous years, where there was not always any logic in the outcome of the shots.

Also the layouts are greatly improved. The value of a real rifle protector , such as Myles Turner or Andre Drummond, has risen sharply because a good contest now means that layout is not in it, but misses. What you used to be to go through the defender sometimes, it's no longer true, it's nine to ten times a defender's block. This is a nice bridle to the next paragraph because ...

... sometimes packing up too well

... the cup says it already: they sometimes took too well. It was almost impossible to score a layout, because you were stuck almost every time by a defender. This is obviously very frustrating, and from time to time the defender seemed to come out of nothing or the layout seemed to open completely until the ball rolled out of the ring and on the other hand we scored the score.

Best MyTeam experience ever

MyTeam was always a little underage child at 2K and could never measure up with the godfather of MyTeam, FUT. Up to NBA 2K18, because this year you can completely loose in the mode for the first time to build a club where you can design everything from your stadiums to your club logo and shirts in which your player plays.

New this year is Pack and Playoffs, which is FIFA 's famous FUT Draft . Here you will get 6 packs open, one for your coach and five for your players. With each pack you can always turn two cards, then you have to choose one. And about that choice, you have to think carefully, and that already begins with your coach.

Imagine, you can choose from Gregg Popovich and Steve Kerr. Where Pop plays defensively, Steve Kerr runs a gun , which means you're running a lot on the fast break and more plays your attacking fire than your defensive power. You will have to find players who use this system: a Steph Curry fits much better with Kerr than a Kawhi Leonard, just to name a few.

We thought "fascinating" first, but when we played our first game, we found out that it really depends on which players you have with any system. This creates a lot of depth, and do not be afraid if you do not know much about basketball: with each player you get a rating of 0 to 100 about how well it fits the system your coach is playing.

New mode is also the "Super Max" mode, where you first play five wars, where you are placed on level. Then you play in one month's season against other players of your season, which means that at the end of the season, depending on how well you've played in the matches during the season, you can win big prizes.

In addition, you also have the Road to the Playoffs, where you have to lead your team through several laps, until you have won all the domination mode, playing against any NBA team and winning incredibly big rewards. Very extensive so, and so we are not bored yet in mode. What we only bored with raids was the MyGM.

MyGM is disappointing

The MyGM mode is disappointing in NBA 2K18. Compared to last year, something has changed, the only thing that's refreshed are the cutscenes you now have if a player wants something of yours, a coach has a qualification or a trainer who wants more salary.

The new story mode in MyGM does not help either. The story is not bad, anymore, so we have had the necessary hours, just the possibility of a normal MyGM player. So now every time you want to start playing the same story again, we will be bored in the long run. The concept is very nice, but the performance can be a lot better.

NBA 2K18 review - works well on almost all fronts

All in all, the NBA 2K18 is a beautiful sports game. The Neighborhood lets you feel basketball and an NBA career, live and experience, the new body scans provide a lot more realism and the new layout and shooting system works well. MyTeam is also a true gift of gods, and the almost renewed MyGM and crazy layups occasionally are not allowed to push the fun. Hands off, 2K.
