The future of game development

There is a new trend in the gaming sector: collaborative game development. Is this way of working the future?

Gaming is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. The fact that the games industry can ignore the crisis is largely due to the huge increase in the number of gamers. In addition, there is also a change in the perception of gaming. Since the huge increase in smartphone, tablet and Facebook usage, the number of gamers has increased explosively. Especially Apple's App Store and later Google's Android Market have caused massive support for gaming. With this, the perception about gaming has become unconsciously a lot more positive. It is widely accepted today that gaming is not just a hobby for nerd types, but actually everyone is playing. Once again, do you know people who never play in any way?

Within these positive movements for industry there is an interesting development going on: collaborative game development. This is a form of applied crowdsourcing that connects to the needs of an ever-increasing group of people who like to work on a project basis. The idea is that there is a large group of talented developers (programmers, artists and designers) who now do not (easily) get the chance to work out their ideas for successful titles. With the huge number of games being released, conquering a position on the market is very difficult. That's why a young Dutch publisher decided to do something about it. Gamious puts the crowd together to develop successful mobile games and act as publishers of these games at the same time.

The Game Train

This form of collaborative game development calls them the 'Game Train'. The concept is simple: on the website you will find projects that are offered in the form of trains. Each train has a number of wagon networks which stand for discrete disciplines required for the development of the particular game. For example, there are wagons for programmers, game design, 2d artists or sound design. If you are well in a particular discipline, you can give up for this and claim the wagon. Gamious then selects the one with the right skills that takes responsibility for this discipline. For example, the ideal project group is created for each project.

In this way, creative talents get the chance to create a game that is guaranteed to be released. In addition, they only need to focus on their component without worrying about marketing and pr. Gamious takes responsibility for overall production and ensures the final quality check. The mix of different disciplines and levels (students to freelancers) of both Gamious self and the varied project teams must provide high quality games with an extremely strong gameplay. This model also exposes the financial risk to the publisher and developers. For example, a large amount of titles can be worked at the same time, without the need for a lot of money. This also immediately leads to more marketing power, because know-how and brand awareness is built to benefit from different Game Train titles. For example, in-game advertising for own games. As soon as the game is issued, participating parties will each receive a portion of the profits. And this can happen at a real hit.
