Souls Leaving Coronado Bridge My California Landmark

The San Diego Coronado Bridge is a landmark in that place. It’s long and pretty and has great views as you drive over it. Unfortunately, it is also the second most deadly suicide bridge in the US after the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Well over 400 people have jumped to their deaths from this bridge.

I knew and loved two of the people who left us this way.

My photo was taken just after the first death of one I knew, while I was standing below the bridge one night and screaming at God.

This young man was one of @bxlphabet's best friends from childhood who was gone soon after high school graduation. Bobby was one of those that I and many others expected to be seeing great things from in his adulthood.

The second was my beautiful friend Susan.

I first knew Susan from her magazine ads in Coronado, and I watched her family and her success in town grow. And then we met when I saw her at local meetings.

Later, Susan was one of the few women I got close to in 20 years living there and she helped me a lot. We hung out on and off for about two years and I considered her a mentor. She was so pretty and gracious. I always wished I could dress like her and look so effortlessly classy.

But Susan was depressed and not confident even though she was so stunning and accomplished. She fought to not be depressed and was impressed with me for never being depressed. We talked about our differences frequently.

The bridge was right there in her hasty moment.

I'm really angry about these deaths. Over 400 deaths off that stupid bridge now, and they just keep coming.

RIP Bobby and Susan and to all victims. May the strong continue to fight in any way they can.

You can search for images on the internet and find many lovely shots of this bridge. I can't look at them now.

I call my photo, "Souls Leaving Coronado Bridge" and it is one of the few bridge shots I have in my Coronado Gallery at pixels.

It gives me peace, since I worry about the souls of those who jump.

The bridge has no barriers to jumping, and is in fact, quite easy to negotiate in that way if that is your goal. Some people have been working on the complicated issue of bridge protection for many years, and I help them when I can.

Hey, @fitinfun.

I've been to San Diego a couple of times. Very lovely place, but as a tourist, I can't say I was privy to what was happening with the bridge. I'm sorry to here that suicides take place there at all, and that it's touched you personally in a couple of ways. It's always surprising when it's the people who seem to have it together, but they still need as much love and support as anyone, and someone to talk about their troubles and fears. If they'll do it. Too much can get bottled up inside, and too much can be ignored by others.

Very sad, but a very enlightening post.

Thank you, @glenalbrethsen. Most local people do not know this either. It is not good for the tourist image. Now that I have been working with this for the last years, I hear of so many sad stories. This bridge is so accessible and easy to get over that it is a crime, really. But will cost many billions to fix. I used to hope for 2025, but I don't think it will be protected by then. They are many issues aside from financial, and lots of hoops to get through. But we keep trying.

Do you live in San Diego?

I did for about 20 years, but now I am in Malaysia @yashire. The bridge was one of the top reasons I left.

O, ic. Yeah, I'm leaving SD too, but not cos of the bridge, i just miss my family in Tx.
