1965 Aston Martin DB5 Bond Car
Some months ago, it was about a new Lego set about James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 but today RM Sotheby's will be bringing the heat to Monterey this August, offering up the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Bond Car.
If you have $US 5,000,000 in STEEM/SBD, it's time to sell them to acquire one of two examples directly purchased for the launch of James Bond's movie Thunderball.
History of the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 "Bond Car"
The DB5 was released in July 1963 by Aston Martin based on the design of Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, Italian coachbuilderfounded in 1926 in Milan. Why DB ? To honour the owner of Aston Martin between 1947 and 1972, Sir David Brown. The DB5 series is more an evolution of the DB4 than a new model one with, mostly, the adoption of a new engine, 4.0 litre (the same on the 1961 Lagonda Rapide). For the design, it looks like the Series 5 DB4, only the twin fuel filler caps make the difference. During its production years (between July 1963 and September 1965), 1,021 examples were built.
Everything starts with the visit of Ken Adam (production designer) and John Stears (special effect) of Aston Martin’s Newport-Pagnell plant in 1963. They searched a car for the third James Bond's movie Goldgfinger. The producers wanted two identical models, one fast for the stunt driving and the other for interior shots with the Stears' modifications. The two cars were rented to the production as Sir David Brown never wanted to give them. With the success of Bond's movies, the DB5 was an huge hit. For Thunderball, two more DB5 saloons was ordered with the gadgets built by Aston Martin to function repeatedly.
“Ejector seat?” Bond exclaimed with a smile. “You’re joking!”
“I never joke about my work, 007,” retorted Q, deadly serious.
