Walter Isaacson is a Professor of History at Tulane and an advisory partner at Perella Weinberg, a financial services firm based in New York City. He is the past CEO of the Aspen Institute, where he is now a Distinguished Fellow and has been the chairman of CNN and the editor of TIME magazine.
He is the author of Leonardo da Vinci; The Innovators; Steve Jobs; Einstein: His Life and Universe; Benjamin Franklin: An American Life; and Kissinger: A Biography, and the coauthor of The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made.
A little bit about the book!
Walter Isaacson's Biography of Leonardo Da Vinci is an exceptional book that discusses in detail the life and work of Leonardo.
It focusses a lot on what Leonardo was like throughout his life. What were his attitudes towards life and his work? What others thought of him. How his artwork was way beyond his time. What Leonardo thought of himself and what he was like in the years leading up to his death.
I have become a huge fan of Leonardo because of the book, and I have gained a new interest in the Renaissance Period which started as a cultural movement in Italy in the Late Medieval period and later spread to the rest of Europe. The Renaissance was a time of great beauty and art and Leonardo was one of the exceptional men in the heart of it all.
What strikes me the most is Leonardo's drive to better himself. He has this childlike curiosity which only strengthens as he grows older and is why he is commonly referred to as The Renaissance Man. In other words, he was a man of many skills. I see it almost like a modern James Bond, but more practical. What is extraordinary is Issacsons claim that Leonardo wouldn't refer to himself as a painter first. More so as an engineer, scientist and mathematician and a painter last.
The book is fascinating from a historical perspective, talking about how life was in the major Italian cities of Florence and Milan in those days. With references to the Medici family, as well as his relationship with Machiavelli and Borgia.
I picked the book up to learn more about what made Leonardo tick, and I finished it with learning a heck of a lot more about Art and painting. This really pleased me, because Isaacson beautifully explains each painting and its significance. I can conclude that Leonardo Da Vinci was truly incredible.
