Blast From the Past - Part 7 - Backyard Cricket

src

Growing up as a kid one of our favorite things to play outside was good old backyard cricket.

Backyard cricket is something I think most of us aussies have played at least once or twice growing up.
Backyard cricket can really vary in the rules which are used, but we had a few rules which which would chop and change.

☠️ The Rules ☠️

Some of the rules we would use:

  1. One hand one bounce.
  2. Over the fence is 6 and out
  3. Auto wickey
  4. Auto run
  5. Batter can't get out on the first ball
  6. LBW's
  7. Break a Window and Out

☠️ One Hand One Bounce ☠️

Where you could still get the batter out by catching with one hand.
If the ball bounced off a wall or the roof, that bounce counts and you must use one hand.

☠️ Over the Fence 6 and Out ☠️

Hitting the ball over the fence counts as 6 runs, but your out of batting and have to hand the cricket bat to the bowler.

☠️ Auto Wickey ☠️

Usually this was a garage door or the rubbish bin.
It the ball hits the bat then hits the auto wickey your out.

☠️ Auto Run ☠️

If you hit the ball you must make a run.
Even if the ball doesn't travel far you gotta run for it.

☠️ Batter Can't Get Out on the First Ball ☠️

This gives the batter a chance to get used to the conditions.
This only lasts the first ball, though an exception can be argued with the umpire for the young ones and the ladies.

☠️ Leg Before Wickets Count ☠️

If the bowler hits your leg and the ball looks like it was sure to hit the wickets, the bowler can shout LBW.
If enough people vote on the decision, the batter is out.

☠️ Break a Window and Out ☠️

If you break a window your automatically out of the game, and usually get your ass tanned lol.

This was usually how we played our backyard cricket.
Though sometimes the conditions may change depending on when we played. So if we were down at the beach for the day there was no 6 and out rule and no auto wickey usually.
Depending on where we played always determined the rules.

We always used to have a hoot playing backyard cricket growing up, have some great memories from it.
If you have not played before I encourage you to try it :)

This is pretty much the reality of growing up in NZ/Aus. Every kid's backyard had its own rules....and every kid had one neighbour whose yard you didn't want to climb into to get your ball back.

Things got interesting when we started taping up tennis balls with black electrical tape to give 'em a bit of a seam, or make 'em swing like Wasim Akram.

When Shane Warne came onto the scene, I remember facing nothing but back-yard leggies for a whole summer....

Haha yeah it would be interesting to know if it's as popular in other countries where cricket is popular sport.
For us it was either cricket or kicking the footy.

Yeah that was the good thing about backyard cricket, ball tampering :D
lol when warney came on to the scene everyone was bowling the old spinners, sometimes I would aim for a overgrown bit of grass off to the side for that extra spin

Yeah my mate used to get the garden hose and water a spot overnight just outside leg stump :-)

Never too young for pitch doctoring!

Haha good one, I never did that trick.
