Motorcycle Riding Tips for Keeping Safe - Be Observant at Intersections

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Statistically intersections are the most dangerous for motorbike rider.
I read somewhere that something like 50% of all accidents involving motorbike riders occur at intersections.

So what can we do to keep us safer in these situations.
Well don't get me wrong I'm not claiming to be an expert on the matter, but I have noticed things I personally do to reduce the risk of an accident happening.

☠️ Watch Other Road Users ☠️

This is critical to me, as your approaching an intersection keep an eye on other drivers. If they are looking at you chances are that they are aware you are coming.
If they haven't made eye contact with me there is a good chance they aren't aware I'm coming.

So slow down.
I usually sit at 45 - 50 kms per hour in a 60 zone in these situations. I am also in the braking position, right hand on the brake level and right foot on the brake pedal.
By doing this if someone decides to pull out as they haven't seen you, you can stop well within a few meters considering we are at 45 - 50 kms per hour and with how good motorbikes can brake are, especially on my MT 07 with twin disks.

You should always be ready to brake if you can identify the potential for an accident to happen. This is the first rule in keeping safe. Sure it can be annoying always switching from a cruising position to being ready to jam on the skids but it's a small price to pay for safety.

Now for say county roads where you may be traveling at 100 kms per hour, it's difficult in some situations to actually see if other drivers have acknowleged you.
So whenever I approach intersections when the speed limit is greater than 60 kms per hour, if there are other vehicles at that intersection and they are not at a stop light(so give way sign) I always reduce my speed by 15 - 20%. So at 100 kms per hour I would drop down to about 80 - 85 kms per hour.
This is only for single lane roads however, if it's double lane I will just move to the lane which isn't in harms way.

Sure the drivers behind you might get upset because your not doing the speed limit, but if I can't see the other driver at that give way sign looking at me I don't care. It's all nice and dandy when your in a car, but on a bike the potential for injury is much higher.

Not a bike rider?
So you might be reading this post thinking well I drive a car so I'm not too concerned about motorbike accidents.
Well you might want to take a look at his pic.

Most accidents involving motorbikes at intersections happen because the driver of the car hasn't seen the bike, so take a good look before you proceed.
You won't want a motorbike through the door of it will mess up your day and motorcyclists please don't speed. Most people gauge if it's safe to pull out or not by how far away other vehicles are, so it your flying down the road like speed racer other road users may not anticipate your traveling at 120 kms per hour in a 60 zone.

It's little things like this which can help keep you safer.
I have started doing these posts for 3 reasons.

  1. To keep other riders safe while on the road
  2. To raise awareness about accidents and safety
  3. to keep myself a bit safer :D

Remember stay safe on the roads and use your head.
