// Security NEWS // A Label To Guarantee The Security Of Your Connected Objects? Finally.

in #news5 years ago

The French company Digital Security has created the "IoT Qualified as Secured" label, which will allow customers to identify solutions with a sufficient level of security. It is now necessary for manufacturers to adhere to this approach.

From a security point of view, as we know, connected objects often leave something to be desired. Manufactured in a hurry for a highly competitive market, many of them do not comply with the most basic protection measures.

Therefore Digital Security, a company specializing in the security of connected objects, is launching today, June 20, the IQS (IoT Qualified as Secured) label. It allows manufacturers to check the security of their solution based on a reference system created by the company and based on national and international standards.

For the customer, the label will be an indicator of confidence. Materialized by a pictogram affixed to the product, it will make it possible to quickly identify the products that have passed this technical evaluation.

The label targets both the consumer and professional market. To obtain it, the product must meet between 25 and 30 technical requirements, depending on the desired level of labelling (Standard or Advanced). These will be tested on a test bench located in the Digital Security laboratory in Paris.

These requirements include encryption of data exchanges, protection of debugging interfaces, presence of a secure update system, personalization of passwords, user authentication, event logging, secure storage of secret keys, etc.

The technical evaluation results in a report that will be sent to an independent labelling committee. Composed of three safety experts, it is them who will validate or not the label for the tested product.

For the manufacturer, the cost of the label is between 10,000 and 30,000 euros, knowing that it is issued for two years. "This is a financially accessible amount. A significant number of suppliers are already interested, especially in-home automation or health care," explains Thomas Gayet, Director of Digital Security's CERT.

The future labelled solutions will appear on the iqs-label.com website.

This initiative is very commendable, and it is to be hoped that manufacturers and customers will support it!

Digital Security is not alone in this approach. In 2016, the European Commission was already calling on economic actors to create a security label. That is why, in 2017, the European cyber security agency Enisa published a security repository for connected objects.

But until now, no label had yet been released. Initiatives like the one of Digital Security could happen in the coming months or years.
