// Privacy NEWS // Was Mark Zuckerberg Aware of Facebook's Questionable Practices?
According to the Wall Street Journal, emails show the involvement of Facebook's big boss in the problematic policy of using its users' personal data. They were unveiled as part of an ongoing federal investigation in the United States.
Not a day goes by without a new Facebook scandal. In the context of an investigation by the US regulator against the social network, several "worrying" e-mails would suggest that Mark Zuckerberg was aware of the group's controversial practices regarding the personal data of its users.
This is reported in the Wall Street Journal, June 12, citing sources close to the case.
It is specified that journalists did not have direct access to the e-mails - which are reviewed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the American trade police.
A potential connection
According to the American newspaper, these exchanges "appear to connect Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg to potentially problematic privacy practices at the company".
The exchanges, dating back to 2012, would reveal that Facebook has not fulfilled its commitments in the agreement concluded the same year with the FTC. The company had made a commitment to the US regulator to strengthen the confidentiality of its users' personal data and to require their consent before sharing such information with a third party.
However, this is precisely what the American commission criticizes in the Cambridge Analytica case. Facebook is reported to have illegally shared 87 million users' personal information with the UK policy consulting firm.
These e-mails could have the effect of a bomb while in April 2018, in front of the American courts, Mark Zuckerberg regretted a "serious mistake". That is why the American newspaper remains cautious, conjugating all verbs to the conditional.
The article does suggest that these disclosures could be the cause of Facebook's willingness to reach an agreement with the FTC.
“We have fully cooperated”
Facebook, for its part, replied through an e-mail:
“We have fully cooperated with the FTC’s investigation to date and provided tens of thousands of documents, emails and files. We are continuing to work with them and hope to bring this matter to an appropriate resolution,”
Shortly afterward, the company sent an additional statement, saying:
“At no point did Mark or any other Facebook employee knowingly violate the company’s obligations under the FTC consent order nor do any emails exist that indicate they did.”
To show its good faith (big lol), Facebook had recently assured itself that it would pay up to $5 billion to reach an agreement with the American authorities.
It remains to be seen whether Mark Zuckerberg knew about the federal investigation...
