// Privacy NEWS // Google Gives Up Cutting Data Bridges With Nest

in #news5 years ago (edited)

Google loves data but was not ready to share it with partners like its Nest subsidiaries, which it has taken over. Threatening an entire ecosystem, Google should ultimately allow interactions between Nest terminals and third parties.

Google has announced an update of its Works with Nest migration plan that addresses many concerns of stakeholders in the Nest ecosystem.

As a reminder, Google and Nest are merging into a single brand called Google Nest. At the same time as the change, Nest customers will be encouraged to transfer their Nest accounts to Google accounts.

The temptation of monopoly

In this context, the giant is interrupting the development of the popular Works with Nest program, which allows Nest products to interact with third-party home automation devices. For example, the popular integration between Nest products and Alexa, Amazon's assistant, seemed threatened by the change.

But Thursday morning, Google announced a review of its merger plan to ensure Nest customers do not suffer from any interruption in their smart home equipment. The most important change concerns the maintenance of a Nest account.

All automated tasks based on interactions with other terminals will continue to work after August 31, even if the user chooses to keep a Nest account rather than switch to a Google account. However, customers will no longer be able to add new interactions in this configuration.

Note that Google encouraged developers to join Works with Google Assistant as a replacement. Problem, Google Assistant devices such as the Google Home smart speaker only control third-party gadgets, not the other way around.

Data exchanges under control

Previously, these integrations would have stopped working in principle, such as the automatic triggering of the recording by the Nest Cam when the alarm was triggered. Google is changing its position, but not on everything.

Google always emphasizes the new features available in Google Accounts. Nest accounts will migrate to a maintenance mode and will only benefit from security updates.

The firm is also working with Amazon so that Alexa and Nest can continue to work together. Google will update its grouped orders called Routines so that customers can, for example, automatically switch their thermostat to home or remote mode as they move back and forth.

Google also promises to add further custom integrations with third parties, but it will subject these partners to a security audit and users will be able to choose the devices and data they want to share with them, as opposed to an all-or-nothing approach.

My advice? These home assistant are one of the main privacy's enemy nowadays, DO NOT BUY ONE if you want to keep your home privacy.
