// NEWS // A Deepfake Video By Mark Zuckerberg Published On Instagram Embarrasses The Social Network

Could Instagram be tempted to delete this video where a very credible fake Zuckerberg is talking nonsense? The social network assures that no.

"Imagine this for a second: One man, with total control of billions of people's stolen data, all their secrets, their lives, their futures," Zuckerberg's likeness says, in the video. "I owe it all to Spectre. Spectre showed me that whoever controls the data, controls the future."

This statement by Mark Zuckerberg was published in a video on Instagram. It could make privacy enthusiasts angry if it were real, but it is only the result of the malicious use of artificial intelligence.

The Video

Artistic work

It is, in fact, the creation of artists Bill Posters and Daniel Howe in association with the advertising agency Canny. It uses deepfake, a technology that is advancing at a high speed, as shown by the latest work of researchers at Princeton and Stanford Universities of the United States.

This video hijacks a 2017 interview about possible Russian interference in the US presidential election.

Posters, Howe and Canny are not on their first try since they had already published deepfake videos of Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian.

What behaviour for Instagram?

But in the situation of Mark Zuckerberg's video, the problem is twofold. Not only does the video make him say false statements (fortunately absurd enough not to be taken seriously), but it is published on Instagram. This social network belongs to Facebook and is therefore also run by Zuckerberg.

The temptation could be strong for Instagram to delete the video without any warning.

“We will treat this content the same way we treat all misinformation on Instagram," a spokesperson for Instagram told Motherboard. "If third-party fact-checkers mark it as false, we will filter it from Instagram’s recommendation surfaces like Explore and hashtag pages.”

Instagram has understood that a pass-through applied to content that closely affects its business would not be fair compared to other misinformation circulating on its network. Above all, it would be catastrophic in terms of brand image.
