// Hacking NEWS // How a Simple Raspberry Pi Allowed To Hack Into the NASA’s System

in #news5 years ago

The hackers managed to spy on the network of the famous Jet Propulsion Laboratory research centre for almost a year. In particular, they were able to extract mission data for Mars.

Managing the inventory of 26,714 computers in three sub-networks is a major task. The slightest error in this administrative work can be fatal, as shown by a recent IT security audit report from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a research centre dedicated to space missions, co-managed by the NASA and the California Institute of Technology.

In 2018, a group of state-sponsored hackers managed to infiltrate JPL's computer systems through a Raspberry Pi, which was connected to the network without authorization.

The administrators simply did not notice its presence, as the equipment inventory was not done on a regular basis.

Lack of patches

The hackers used the Raspberry Pi as a springboard to access other systems and create a user account. They were then able to move through the networks due to a lack of segmentation. Finally, once installed, they spyed on JPL's systems for almost a year and, thanks to an unpatched critical flaw.

They managed to extract 23 files, including 2 relating to exploration missions on Mars. In total, this represents about 500 MB of data.

The crackers also had access to the network through which flight data from NASA's various space vehicles was transmitted. These data are collected by a global network of satellite dishes (Deep Space Network) and shared with different NASA divisions.

The JPL had to be disconnected from these missions to ensure their integrity and avoid contamination of other NASA networks.

The audit report does not give any indication of the identity of the crackers. But last December, the US government accused two Chinese, alleged members of the APT10 pirate group, of spying on more than 45 US technology organizations... including JPL.
