The birth of civilisation is always said to have coincided with the evolution of mankind on earth. Before this, all creatures existed by instinct, but mankind introduced a whole new dinension.

For the first time, there were creatures capable of creative thought. This power of thinking
transitioned mankind towards civilisation.

There are two main theories-:
1. The first is that various species of mankind developed simultaneously in different parts of the world.
2. The second and the more commonly accepted theory is that it originated in Africa, and later moved to Asia and Australia, then to Europe and finally to America.

The Homo Sapiens are the ancestors of the modern man. The rise of Homo Sapiens occured between, 1,30,000 to 2,00,000 years ago. These early humans were hunter gathers. Much of Europe at that time was covered by ice and these nomadic people followed game trails and river valleys to get fish. As a result of extreme cold, glaciers were formed and the sea-level fell. This created land bridges in different parts. Europe, Asia and America were linked with narrow land bridges. This enabled the people one place to migrate to other parts.

Based upon biological traits, mankind has been divided into four races:
1. Austroloid (Pygmies of central Africa, people
of Australia)
2. Mongoloid (Asiatic people)
3. Negroid (Africa in warm climates)
4. Caucasian (Europe)
