New Books Tuesday: July 10

Many people know that Wednesday is New Comics day. Somewhat less known is the fact that Tuesday, in the US, is New Books day.

Weekly disclaimer: This weekly post highlights some of the books being published on any given week, usually in the science fiction and fantasy genres, both YA and books for adults. I am VERY likely to miss cool new books, so please feel free to tell me about them in the comments. Sometimes these will be books I've read a pre-publishing copy of, but most of the time, they will not. These are books I find notable, but I certainly don't read fast enough in English to be able to read all the cool books that come out every week.

We've had some big weeks here on NBT, but none bigger than this one. Each of the top three books of the weeks would easily be a headliner on most weeks. Let's get into it.

Spinning Silver) by Naomi Novik

The novelette by the same name that this novel is based on was brilliant, a complete reinterpretation of Rumpelstiltskin. This is the much expanded version, and knowing Novik's work, I have no doubt it'll be terrific.

Deep Roots (Innsmouth Legacy #2)) by Ruthanna Emrys

The first Innsmouth Legacy novel, Winter Tide, was one of the finest debuts of recent years. Emrys approaches the Lovecraftian mythos with a lot of love, a lot of criticism, and a lot of talent. If you love Lovecraft, but wish he wasn't a racist misogynist asshole, and also wish he could write good prose, this series is for you.

European Travels for the Monstrous Gentlewoman (Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club #2)) by Theodora Goss

The adventures of the monstrous daughters of 19th century literature's mad scientists continue. I enjoyed the first book a great deal, and I am definitely looking forward to this one.

I Only Killed Him Once (Ray Electromatic) by Adam Christopher

I'm not sure how I missed this series of California noir novels starring a robotic detective turned hitman, but I am certainly intrigued.

The Final Frontier: Stories of Exploring Space, Colonizing the Universe, and First Contact by Neil Clarke

This is a reprint anthology of space stories featuring some terrific stories from some of the very best writers in science fiction.

Suicide Club: A Novel About Living by Rachel Heng

In a future where some - including our protagonist - have a chance to live forever, and the average life span is 300 years, the decision to end one's life is more than taboo, it is highly illegal.

The Traitor’s Ruin (Traitor’s Trilogy #2) by Erin Beaty

This is the second book in a well reviewed fantasy romance series, where the heroine is both matchmaker and spy.

The Naming of the Beasts (Felix Castor #5) by Mike Carey

The fifth novel in the prose dark fantasy series by wonderful comicbook writer Mike Carey. While this seems right in my wheelhouse, I'll admit the first in the series didn't really work for me, so I abandoned it. But people do like the series.

Latchkey (Archivist Wasp #2) by Nicole Kornher-Stace

At some point, I really do need to read Archivist Wasp, the first book in this series. People who's taste I trust absolutely adore it.

Half-Witch by John Schoffstall

This coming of age fantasy in a fairytale world is getting some great reviews.

Bright We Burn (And I Darken #3) by Kiersten White

This one is more of a PSA. This series is hella popular, so if you've been waiting for the new one, it's here!

The Supervillain and Me by Danielle Banas

This superhero YA novel seems quite fun!

Dreamfall by Amy Plum

This is the first novel in a duology about seven people who get trapped together in their own nightmares, and must band together to survive.

Game of the Gods by Jay Schiffman

This is a futuristic science fantasy debut of a world hit by apocalypse, and the rag tag group that must be ruthless to save it. Intriguing, but probably not for me.
