New Books Tuesday: June 5

in #news6 years ago

Many people know that Wednesday is New Comics day. Somewhat less known is the fact that Tuesday, in the US, is New Books day.

Weekly disclaimer: This weekly post highlights some of the books being published on any given week, usually in the science fiction and fantasy genres, both YA and books for adults. I am VERY likely to miss cool new books, so please feel free to tell me about them in the comments. Sometimes these will be books I've read a pre-publishing copy of, but most of the time, they will not. These are books I find notable, but I certainly don't read fast enough in English to be able to read all the cool books that come out every week.

June is gonna be a pretty big month for books, apparently. And as it includes National Book Week here in Israel, that seems fitting. Week one is, as it often is, the biggest week in terms of sheer numbers. So buckle up, and let's talk books.

Bruja Born (Brooklyn Bruja #2) by Zoraida Córdova

The first Brooklyn Bruja novel, Labyrinth Lost, was good and very fun. Smart, latinx YA urban fantasy is becoming a thing, spearheaded by Córdova and Daniel José Older.

The Memory of Fire ) by Callie Bates

This is a sequel to last year's The Waking Land, which was received with mixed reviews. If you liked the previous book, you'll probably be glad to hear this one's out.

Brief Cases by Jim Butcher

This is an anthology of stories starring Butcher's most famous creation, professional wizard Harry Dresden. I read several of those, and kinda liked them, but Dresden's mysoginy grated on me, and eventually I quit the series.

Free Chocolate by Amber Royer

It's a spacefaring romance with a heist, and it all centers around earth only valuable export: Chocolate. Color me intrigued!

A People’s History of the Vampire Uprising by Raymond A. Villareal

So this one appears to be a cross between a vampire book and a zombie book. It's a vampire book because it's about vampires. It's like a zombie book, in that vampirism is a plague that's sweeping the world, which makes it somewhat apocalyptic. Also, in that it deals with the medical causes, which is another thing you see more in zombie books.

Adrift by Rob Boffard

A group of space tourists are attacked in space. And now they may have something in their ship! This one is getting stellar reviews on Goodreads, where it currently sits at 4.5 stars, which is pretty awesome for a non sequel.

Outbreak by Melissa F. Olson

This is the third novel in a trilogy I was not aware of, and now I'm intrigued. This series is about the Chicago field office of the Bureau of Preternatural Investigation, which is basically the FBI, but for vampire stuff. The first book in the trilogy is Nightshades

The Book of M by Peng Shepherd

This debut novel has a super intriguing concept: A plague which causes people to lose their shadows, and then their memories. It sounds like an utterly unique post apocalypse scenario, and has been getting tremendous reviews.

Smoke in the Sun by Renee Ahdieh

This is a public service announcement. The sequel to Ahdieh's super popular Flame in the Mist is now out. This YA fantasy series has been very popular, and I don't see the sequel changing that.

Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl

This is one I only became aware of researching this post, and I am curious. It features a mysterious death, and then, one year later, time stopping to allow the dead guy's girlfriend to investigate.

What are you looking forward to reading?
