Irving Williams and the Lighthouse Ghost--Part 19--The Audio

in #writing8 years ago

My experiment continues, but is getting close to the end.

I am closing in on 10,000 words for the entire story which would make for a decent size chapter book for elementary students.

I am working on a new book, while also writing this story.

This is going to be a chapter book for elementary students, think Goosebumps.

I am writing this story without an outline and putting up the story as I finish each part.  I am enjoying getting to know these characters and setting. I am also doing this to prove to myself that a story can be written quickly and without an outline.

In the last part a voice began speaking in the lighthouse and called out Irving by name.

Part 19

Irving was shaking. His knees shook and his hands shook. But his grandfather stood still.

“Yes, we want to see you, Mr. Jackson,” said Mr. Williams.

Irving gulped and whispered, “Grandpa! What are you doing?”  Mr, Williams eyed Irving.

“Well? Are you going to show us? Are you going to appear to us?”

Alec was sweating. Irving’s teeth were now audible with their chattering.

Mr. Williams looked around the lighthouse. “Do you want me to turn the light off Mr. Jackson?”

“Grandpa, I want to go home,” Irving whispered.

“Mr. Jackson?” Mr. Williams replied.

“Mr. Williams, let go home, before we all pee in our pants,” whispered Alec.

Mr. Williams looked around one more time. He listened. No reply came. “Okay, boys. You’re right.” He took a deep breath. “You’re right boys. You two pack the microphone up and I will go to the top and get the video camera. You guys can wait for me outside."

Irving and Alex got the microphone and went outside. Irving was still shaking.

“What the heck was that?” Alec asked.

“Sounded like a ghost?” Irving replied. “It was scary enough.”

Alec stood quietly. Irving walked around in circles, calming himself down.

The lighthouse door open and Mr. Williams walked out with the camera. “Come on, let’s go boys.” He walked quickly to the car and the boys followed. The climbed into the car and shut the door.

Alec spoke, “Mr. Williams, do you think I can go home with you guys so I can hear the audio.”

Mr. Williams smiled, “I’m fine with that, we have the room.”

Mr. Williams called Alec’s grandparents to okay the sleepover, and then they headed home. A few minutes later they walked in the front door.

“Well, hey Alec. Do we have a visitor for the evening?” said Irving’s grandmother.

“Yes, he can sleep in Irving’s room,” Irving’s grandfather replied. He waved off Irving’s grandmother and headed into his office. Irving and Alec followed. They put down their bags and pulled out the camera and microphone.

“Let’s do the microphone first,” Mr. Williams said. He put the card connected to the microphone into the computer. A long green rectangle appeared on the screen and placed into a time line.

“It seems we have about a ninety minutes of audio to go through,” said Irving.

Alec pulled up a chair. “Well, we better get comfortable.”

“I’ll go make some popcorn first,” said Mr. Williams smiling.
