Irving Williams and the Lighthouse Ghost--Part 14--The Photograph---Original Steemit fiction

in #writing8 years ago

My little experiment is humming right along.

Thank you for your support.

I am working on a new book, while also writing this story.  This is probably going to be a chapter book for elementary students, think Goosebumps.

I am writing this story without an outline and putting up the story as I finish each part.  I am enjoying getting to know these characters and setting. I am also doing this to prove to myself that a story can be written quickly and without an outline.

Click here for part 1, part 2,  part 3,part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9, part 10, part 11,part 12, part 13

Each part is roughly 500-750 words.  I write 2-3 pages in Word and then post them here.  Thank you those that have mentioned they are liking the story.  It means a lot.

Part 14 The Photograph

The next morning Irving got up and went downstairs to eat breakfast. His parents and grandparents were already in the kitchen eating breakfast.

“So, did you have fun running around the lighthouse last night?” Irving’s father asked. Irving glanced at his grandfather, looking for a clue to see if he could mention the ghost. He didn’t see it.

“It was fun to see the inside of it without anyone else there,” Irving replied.

“I wantta go to the beach!” shouted Lucas, Irving’s little brother.

“We will. We will,” said his mother. “Just give us a moment to eat breakfast please.”

Irving grabbed a bowl of cereal, his grandfather stood next to him and leaned into his ear, “Let’s check out that picture now, in my study on the computer.”

Irving’s parents were distracted by Lucas, so Irving took his cereal and followed his grandfather into his study. The computer was already on, the camera was laid next to the monitor. He pulled the card out of the camera and popped it into the computer. The pictures from the night before in the lighthouse appeared on the screen. Mr. Williams scrolled through until he got to the last photograph.

“There it is,” he whispered to himself. He enlarged the picture. “I’ll be. It does look like someone’s foot is there.” He pointed to the lower left part of the picture.

Irving leaned in over his grandfather’s shoulder. “Yeah, that does look like the heal of a shoe. Almost like a sneaker of some sort.”

“Well, our ghost wouldn’t be wearing a sneaker, they didn’t have sneakers in the 19th century,” replied Mr. Williams. “That isn’t a sneaker.”

There was a knock at the door. Irving’s dad opened the door, “Dad, Irving, Alec swung by.”

Alec stepped past Irving’s dad, “Hey guys.”

“Hey Alec!” Irving replied. “So, I take that it’s okay he’s here.”

“Thank you, George, it’s okay,” Mr. Williams waved Irving’s dad away. Irving’s dad stood realizing that he was not welcomed. So, he shook his head and walked out into the hallway closing the door behind him.

Irving’s grandfather waved Alec toward the computer, “Come here, you’ll want to see this.”

Alec leaned into the monitor. “That looks like a foot.”

“Is it sneaker?” Irving asked.

Alec shook his head, “I can’t tell.” He tapped the screen, “But that is a foot.  Someone or something was in the lighthouse with us.”
