Project Details

Node.js, by definition, is an open-source, cross-platform JavaScript run-time environment that executes JavaScript code outside the browser. This means that now it is possible to execute a program written in JS outside a web browser such as Google Chrome, Safari, etc. This creates an extension to what the language can do, besides just creating interactive websites. With the help of the V8 JavaScript runtime engine, it can now take the code and convert it into a faster machine code, e. g., Node.js eliminates the waiting and continues to take care of the next task.

From my personal perspective, Node.js represents an advantage for the coders to write code, since it still has all the capabilities and functionalities JavaScript offers, but now in a more extended way. Also, thanks to all the time I have been contributing with this project, I have realized the huge amount of time and effort that the Node.js team has taken in order to make it as good as it is and also to improve it with every single upgrade.

You can take a look at their Crowdin project here.

  • Translation Overview

This is the 37th translation I made for the Node.js project, and on this contribution I kept working on the Changelog_IOJS.md folder, which I define as follows:

-- CHANGELOG_IOJS.md: this folder is meant to keep a record of notes related to the Node.js project, such as notable changes, known issues and commits, made throughout every upgrade of the project. The format of the strings on this folder is organized by paragraphs -which every single one defines a unique change made within a function or a file- that starts with the code number of the change, followed by the change, and ending with the name of the author between parenthesis.

In previous posts, we have discussed about the meaning and the function of the JavaScript and WebAssembly V8 engine, which, in short words, it can be described as an "open source high-performance engine written in C++" (v8, n.d.). On this contribution we found a new term that has a big relation with it, GYP. GYP, an acronym that stands for Generate Your Project, is an build automation tool, that is, a tool that allows the process of automating the creation of a software or application by compiling source code into binary code, then packaging it and running automated tests.

To make it sound even more simple, GYP is a software that allows users to create other softwares. It gives the person all the tools that can be used in order to create or modify a project, but it is usually utilized to manage large projects, because it is intended to be built on multiple platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux, etc), therefore the project can be built using the ideal IDEs on each platform as if the project is a native one. Examples of softwares built with GYP are Telegram, Google Chrome and Node.js.

Now, after describing what GYP does, we can talk about FreeBSD, which is an operating system that runs GYP. First of all, yes, it is free. Second of all, FreeBSD is an "open-source Unix-like operating system" (Wikipedia, 2018) which main functionality is to power modern servers, desktops and embedded platforms. Due to its advanced network security, plenty of the busiest websites decided to use it in order to protect their data. Among them there are Cisco, Apple, McAfee, NetApp and Sony.

In other words, this thing is absolutely SAFE!

A huge advantage that FreeBSD presents, in contrast to most Linux-based operating systems, is that it is a complete operating system environment with a kernel, device drivers and a shell tool. The other ones have a separated kernel, application, and userland utilities. Also FreeBSD supports a a huge variety of networking protocols, such as TCP/IP, IPv6, Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), IPSec, Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX), and AppleTalk. this allows users to integrate FreeBSD-based computers with different operating systems running within the same networks. This is one of the big reasons that makes it so secure.

Therefore, if you are planning of becoming the next Mark Zuckerberg, please have in mind using FreeBSD.

Hi @samuellmiller,

Thank you for submitting your contribution!

  • Node.js is a very interesting project that contains many code values and terms related to computer science. Its difficulty relies on the fact that we must pay a lot of attention to the code in order to deliver the most accurate translation possible.

  • Your presentation post follows all the general guidelines. It is very well written and formatted, includes all the basic details as well as your personal feedback. You also shared useful concepts you learned while working on this contribution.

  • You did a great job with your translation. You used the correct vocabulary and you were careful with code values that should not be translated in order to make sure the text keeps its true meaning.

Keep up the good work!
