Khao San Road - Bangkok

Last night child free

last night of freedom.jpg

What to do in Bangkok if you have one night left childfree, head to Khao San Road of course. If my hubby had his way we would have relaxed in and enjoyed the quiet time but as you know opposites often attract and happy wife equals a happy life so off to Khao San we went.

If you don't know about Khao San Road then you are probably not a backpacker, been to Thailand or have been living under a rock as Khao San Road is one of the must do things in Bangkok.

me & khao san.jpg

Clearly, given we about to pick up our son, we are not backpackers but once upon a time I was, I spent three months with one of my best friends backpacking through Thailand and one of our favourite places we stayed was on this strip as it is a one-stop party shop. Well at night at least, during the daytime it's much more subdued and from memory a whirl of smells you just don't need when you are hung over.

Don't tell my bestie I told you but she threw up down an alley off of Khao San due to just that reason.

We arrived pretty early as far as Khao San goes but there was still lots to see, including the obligatory drunk tourist, market stalls and loud music coming at you for every side, most of the time competing with each other, which makes an interesting combo in some parts.

Talking of interesting things to see and do, we came across more than one of these tasty treat stalls, and while I am open to trying new things, I was more than happy to pay the 10 baht to take some photos without the requirement to eat them.

When I was in Thailand backpacking with my bestie, we tried a few of these but the below three were beyond our upchuck reflex.

Scorpian, Cricket or Frogs anyone?

This is new, when did Nitrous oxide become a thing? Although we never tried this I have had it before as a pain med when in a hospital and it made every word sound like I was at a rave. I am sure there was giggling but I was also in immense pain getting a wound packed that was the size of a fist, so it was mixed with a lot of tears and I was not keen to relive that experience.

Fun fact @shai-hulud just googled for me. This is actually the seventh most popular drug in the 50 countries as found out by a global drug survey.

Another thing that I think makes the Bangkok experience is the obligatory Tuk Tuk drive. Don't be disillusioned these drivers will take you for as much as you are willing to give so whatever they quote you, half it and know that if you were to take a metered taxi that it would cost you half that again.

Driver telling me no photos or 50 baht payable

Given that he dropped us in the wrong place and refused to take us any further there was zero chance I was paying him 50 baht to take a photo nor was I deleting the hundred I took during the trip back to the hotel room. Although I knew this was a possibility it was a final rite of passage for me as I really wanted to go on one last ride to commemorate our last night as unresponsible adults.

As tomorrow we will have to be responsible for a whole little human and the stress of driving in a taxi with no baby seat is enough let alone an open-air Tuk Tuk. In saying this I think he would love it as he seems to be a little adrenaline junkie like his mummy already. The joys of growing up and worrying about someone more than yourself, an interesting concept to get used too but one we are more than ready for.

Dinner before Khao San Road

Note that while this post was intended to be out before we picked up little man, life got in the way and then got super busy while we figured out this parenting thing, at first we just needed to sleep when he slept. Our initial thoughts of being able to write while he slept went out the window when we couldn't keep our eyes open. It's now day three and life is getting slightly more orderly as he learns to trust us and we learn his quirks.

Thanks for sticking around in our time of little posting, we will be back in no time and as always thanks for reading and hope to see you next time.

Looks like a lot of fun. I have never been to bangkok. Been all over the us and the Mediterranean. Never been to an Asian country though. Maybe some day. Not sure I could stomach those frogs and stuff either. I think I would have tried the nitrous oxide though. I love that stuff at the dentist. 😁

Haha, yes my hubby said it was used at the dentist, they were giving it out in balloons. I love Asian countries to visit, it may also be the fact that they are so close to us and they are much cheaper to travel through than the US etc. In fact to get to Bali from where I live in Perth its closer than to fly to our capital city or the east coast. Thailand is only 7 hours away.

That makes sense. Im from ohio so i usually go caribian.

@big.ock We were in the Carribean in 2017 as part of a nude cruise out of Tampa in Florida. There was even a nude island we stopped at, who knew these things existed. lol...

I have heard of nude cruises. Ive never been on one myself. I did go to a nude beach in st marteen.

We could love to visit St Martin. We have heard great things about it from the other cruise goers. I didnt even know they were a thing. My hubby found it as I wanted to cruise he likes being naked. A win win lol.

Lovely market but crazy things they have. The scorpions and crickets, I have heard of but laughing gas???

Trust you are having a blast in Bangkok and yes happy Mother's Day to you @insideoutlet. The day has come and I rejoice with you meeting your baby!! :)

He just melts our heart when he smiles so its all worth it, even the tantrums and the tears. He is doing so well given we took him from everything he has ever known. Such a little trooper.

That certainly looked to be a lot of fun! When I used to hang out in New Orleans you could get a 'balloon' filled with laughing gas but it was kinda hush, hush. I laughed so hard one time that I knocked a whole wall of intimate vibrating 'thingies' off the wall - visualize me on the floor by this point unable to breathe by the spectacle I found myself in.

Congratulations on your parenthood :) Beautiful experience - hope you share lots of posts on your journey.

I laughed so hard one time that I knocked a whole wall of intimate vibrating 'thingies' off the wall

Hahahahaha I just laughed s hard envisioning that scene that I cried lol..

Beautiful experience - hope you share lots of posts on your journey.

I keep meaning to write about it but its hard to get the words out, plus due to the nature of adoption in Australia you are not allowed to share any identifying photos or facts until the process is complete which can't be until 6-9months post arriving back in the country. :(

He does melt our hearts with his smile. :D

I am so happy for you all :) So, so happy. You don't have to share photos....just share your heart and the experience. If not publicly, then to capture all these beautiful feelings and moments. You always think that you can go back later and write them down, but it's never the same as capturing the words and feelings in that moment it is happening.

Cherish every moment...they grow so quickly.

And congratulations again - If you do decide to share a post, let me know!

@youhavewings That is very true, I have been trying to write bits and pieces down but we had hoped to do that while he slept but we are so tired we just want to sleep too. Like now, we have another hour or so but my eyes are so heavy that I think I will shut down the PC soon and sleep. :)

LOL! Yes! I so remember my husband and I in a state of delirium those first 6 weeks - one day we just sat on the bed and cried about the tiredness :) You do get used to it and it does get better....it really does. As soon as your little man starts a normal schedule of sleep, you'll get more sleep. Around 5 or 6 weeks. And hopefully he'll be a napper, too :) Really helps.

I think he will be a good sleeper and he does nap during the day, we try to sleep with him but that also neabs nothing gets done. We are looking forward to getting him home as living in a hotel is hard.

Oh I bet that is hard. When can you leave the hotel? Wow, didn't realize that.

This Friday, so just under a week more. We still have three more appointments to finalize the adoption before we can take him out of the country.

Welcome to your last day of freedom! Haha, I say that as a proud father of 2....

Anyway, you didn't know about Nitrous Oxide? Better keep up with what the kids are doing! You have to try to stay one step ahead of them....

I knew about it but not that it was the drug of the hour lol... I do need to get on top of these things now, its been a steep learning curve to date. If we could keep him from falling over and hurting himself that would be a great start... :D

Ha ha, Yes they are determined to injure themselves. I have accidentally left my older one fall down stairs, and the younger one I have dropped in the middle of the night...

The younger one recently got a chipped tooth, but that wasn't on my watch!

@bengy haha glad the chipped tooth wasn't on your watch, the stairs would have sent me into a spin lol, I was dropped down a flight of stairs as a baby and got a fractured skull, I still get migraines from it today if hit on that side of my face.

This "fall" wasn't on my watch either lol which is little consolation lol.

Great post! Wonderful story and photos! I can't blame you for not wanting to eat the insects and frogs! There's just not enough alcohol in the world!

haha, they actually smelled quite good and I have eaten snails and frog legs before as well as the silkworms but that was on a cruise in a 5 star dining room, not off a street cart where I would see there heads lol.

Of course! Snails are yummy with lots of butter and garlic! Big plump frog legs taste like chicken. I've never tried silkworms, though. I can't blame you you for not want to eat those thing from a street vendor!

@rwedegis yeah the frogs, did taste like chicken but a bit fishy too. the silkworms just tasted like garlic.

Glad you manage to get so fun before gets tied down with kid.
Though the creepy insects really creeps me out!

haha yeah they were pretty freaky and there were so many of them for sale, what got me more was the drunk idiots eating them lol..

LOL... I wonder how they feel the next day... hahaha

@roselifecoach I am guessing very sick but more from the amount of alcohol required to consume them then the bugs themselves lol.. That won't stop them blaming the bugs thought lol..

LOL, I can imagine how shock and started to blame each other too!

Amazing pictures and a beautiful post! Congratulations too :-) <3

Thanks @holisticmom, some interesting times ahead, we already had an incident this morning and now he has a little bruise above his head, not what we needed pre finalisation... But kids do what they will do..

Oh no! That must be so worrying for you, especially when there are people watching over your every move. Don't worry though, kids get bumps and bruises all the time it's part of how they learn about the world. I'm certain everything will be fine. Stay positive! I'm super excited for you guys <3 xx

Thanks @holisticmom fingers crossed you are right. Im sure they see enough kids that they know its normal.

Omg!! I bet your little one has so much fun with you guys as parents!

haha, dad (@shai-hulud) is the fun one, he loves him and is even saying da da already, he copies him and loves being throw in the air. All giggles and smiles until he throws up lol..
