Statue Series - What's The Story: John of Nepomuk

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Another statue from Tihany, Hungary, that I managed to photographed was this baroque style statue of John of Nepomuk, a known Czech saint (Bohemia then) who was drown by the order of the emperor in 1393.

To the Catholics, he is seen as a martyr as he defended theSeal of the Confessional. To Romantic Nationalists he is seen as a Czech martyr to imperial interference. To most historians he is seen as a victim of controversy between secular rulers and the Catholic hierarchy.

In Hungary, he is loved and known as patron saint of rivers, bridges, sailors, waterfowlers and fishermen.

I love how many saint sculptures (around the world) are with golden halos with golden stars. So lovely to see, don't you think?
