This archeological and historical city is located in the southern part of Jordan. Petra city is known by other names such as Raqmu (named as the capital city by the Nabataeans who inhabited the area) and Rose City (the color of the stone making up the architecture). This amazing site is famous for its conduit system and its architecture that consists of rock cuttings. This amazing tourist attraction dates as far back in time as the 312 BC
The Nabataeans prided themselves in making efficient water collection modes to help them survive in this desert environment. They made use of their immediate materials and curved up a city eight hundred meters above the sea level, with the use of sandstone. This city was a trade center that had close proximity to the most lucrative trade routes in the region. Thus, Petra city was flourishing economically.
Some tourists visit this site for biblical purposes since the city is the slope of the biblical Mount Hor (currently called Jebel al-Madhbah). In 2007, this city was listed as part of the new Seven Wonders of the World. In addition to this, the United Nations Economic, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named it their World Heritage Site as of 1985.
