TIL How to Roast CoffeesteemCreated with Sketch.

My Madison, WI trip took an awesome turn when me and Dylan got the chance to hang out at Kin-Kin Roastery, drink some great coffee and learn how my favorite morning/afternoon/evening drink is roasted and prepared.

Lennon is the roast-man and also Dylan's bro, so we got to see under the hood and watch the process from start to delivery of freshly roasted coffee goodness. The process isn't as difficult as I thought it would be, but it's one of those things that is easy to learn but difficult to master. This is most definitely one of those things.

Barrels o' Beans

The barrels hold hundreds of pounds of coffee that's ready to be roasted. Sent from different countries, large burlap bags of beans rest against the wall.

Once scooped from the buckets and weighed, the load of coffee beans is ready for the roaster. This machine had already been going so it was ready to work!

This batch of beans will be monitored by both the computer and Lennon, to ensure it is not over done. According to the Roast Dude each batch is like a fingerprint, so each one must be watched for quality.

Coffee Break!

While we waited we were treated to some coffee that had already been fully prepared. He used this Star Wars Droid looking coffee machine to grind up the beans

A fresh coffee really hit the spot, and the Kenyan blend we had began with a slightly acidic start but a very smooth finish and back end.

When we finished the coffees it was time to let the coffee beans out of the roaster to cool down. By cooking the beans down quickly, you can prevent any over roasting.

As the beans rotate, the heat coming from them is pulled down through the grate and is released via vent away from the beans. This batch will need about 24 hours to properly de-gas before being ready for consumption.

Bag and Tag

Once the beans have cooled enough they are collected and weighed, but not before we get to have fun letting pounds of coffee run through our fingers.

It was great to witness the process of roasting coffee, and we talked about our preparation preferences, I like French Press. I don't think I could be a master roaster any time soon but I do feel like I have a better understanding of my coffee and how it gets to me.

We head back to NYC tomorrow and this trip has zoomed by! I always enjoy coming to Wisconsin to relax and wash off the rat race city. While @papa-pepper and I didn't cross paths it was still a much needed and invigorating few days. I look forward to heading back to the city for NYE with friends and loved ones, what're you all doing for New Years?

That's something I've wanted to learn as well. Right now I am learning how to brew beer, so the coffee will be next. :)

Brewing beer is awesome and something I wish I had the space to do! Hopefully you do a post about it so we can follow along :)

I definitely will, and you will see that it doesn't take much space at all. :)

oh man im such coffee lover.. sadly people follow me only for crypto posts ;)

I never thought I'd be such a coffee lover since I hated it growing up but man do I love it now !

Awesome post. What does WI stand for? In England WI is the Womens Institute.

WI is the state abbreviation for Wisconsin :)

Excellent stuff, mind you can also do it with a little effort in the house in a pan!!! Nothing quite beats fresh roasted coffee!

I've been ruined for any other type of coffee :) I wanna try the home diy version now!

It definitely is quite the thing!! You will be all about the green bean purchasing now!!
