PREAMBLE: In 1891, Darwin’s first book about human nature describes that humans are not by nature fast, or strong, or agile, or endowed with sharp claws and huge long fangs. What we have is the ability to cooperate and to take care of each other. And he said sympathy is the strongest instinct in human nature.

Sadly, the people that popularize Darwin ignored that his message about human nature. Instead, they deceived their brothers and sisters into believing that survival of the fittest is the law that we must abide in order to survive.

Unlike most of our animal cousins, humans are not born with the ability to survive on its own. We completely depend on other human beings to help us learn the skills that we need to survive. We learn how to crawl and walk with the help of our parents or siblings. We drink and eat through the love and care of our mother. We learn how to speak by imitating other people.

Democracy and cooperation is in our DNA. We are hardwired to be compassionate, to be a community, to be our brother’s keeper. And If we don’t reinvent ourselves, if we don’t unite and cooperate, our species will go extinct.

A Story of What We Have Become

There was once a native tribe that lived in peace and harmony for thousands of years. And every day, the routine was the same - hunters would go out from the tribe and when they return, bounties from the hunt were shared equally to all the members of the tribe. No one went hungry when food is available. Not even the weak, the sick, or the elderly.

One day, the most skilled hunter said, “I’m the best hunter. I kill more than my share of deer. Why should I share the bounty of my hunt”. And from that day forward, he began storing his bounty in a high mountain cave. And then other skilled hunters said, “we kill more than our share of deer too. Don’t we have the right to keep the bounty of our hunt?”.
And they too began to store their meat in high mountain caves.

And then, something began to happen in the tribe that never happened before. Some people in the tribe especially the weak, the sick and the elderly begun to go hungry while others were well fed. In fact, it became so commonplace that no one even thought that it was unusual that some were starving while others were having more than what they needed. And what’s even more strange is that the tribal elders began to teach their young to emulate the hoarding habits of this few.

This story isn’t true because it happened. It's true because its happening. We are that tribe.

We are a tribe that used to believe that hoarding wealth beyond our needs is considered a mental illness but we allowed greed to transform ourselves into a species that glorify this mental illness that is unknowingly destroying our environment and ourselves.

We humans, have broken the universal law and the law is this:

“Nothing in nature takes more than it needs. If something does, it becomes subject to this law and it dies off."

An ocean, a rainforest, the human body are all cooperatives. A redwood tree does not take all of the nutrients. Just enough for it to grow. A lion does not kill all the gazelles - just one to feed the pride.

We have a term for the body that takes more than what it needs – CANCER.

We are that cancer. Everything else on Earth is in perfect harmony except us.

It’s a real challenge for our species to change and we don't have too many choices. We can either allow this cancer to destroy us, run away from it, or become cancer ourselves. The fourth option is to heal the people with their mental illness.

It's a tough choice but there is no other way. And there’s only one way to eat an elephant - one small piece at a time. Let's start with this platform - Steemit.
