How Two Unknowns Became Known Worldwide By the Power of a “Resteem”
Leveraging the power of edification.
This is a story about Merrick Hanna and Alec Benjamin. Merrick grew up imitating robots as a child and it turned into a passion of his to dance like one. Merrick is only 12 but his skill level is that of dancers 10 years his senior. And, Alec Benjamin is a 23-year-old man who sounds like a child when he sings. Without formal music training, he tinkers on his piano or guitar until he hears something that “strikes a chord”.
Merrick auditioned for America’s Got Talent, dancing to Alec’s song, I Built a Friend. The 90-second audition trended. In one month, the audition was viewed over 17 million times with 18,300 other YouTube videos referencing it. The song ‘I built a friend’ as millions of view and references. Seemingly overnight, Merrick had a worldwide following and took Alec along for the ride solidifying both their careers.
Merrick "resteemed" Alec.
Merrick could have picked any song. By showcasing Alec’s song, Merrick essentially resteemed Alec’s creation. A resteem, also known as a reblog, represented honor, generosity, and gratitude and can result in both parties increasing their influence. Merrick and Alec were amazing apart, but together… oh, baby!

An "extra life" in pinball.
Resteeming puts great content of others at the top of feeds across the Steem ecosystem. It’s like playing a pinball game and winning an extra life because you rocked it! And, when a resteem gets a resteem, that’s like getting 2 extra lives. It puts food on the table for both worthy content creators and their dedicated curators so they can go back out the next day and be great again. Followers are exposed to better content. With everyone winning, “to the moon” Steem value is inevitable.
You are what you resteem.
Remember, resteeming is great, but your profile is prime real estate, so don’t resteem everything. Fortunately, for new minnows unaccustomed to the permanence of the blockchain, the system asks us if we are sure we want to resteem, giving us a chance to reflect.
Do I want to make it a permanent part of my profile? Will this help others? Was I moved or inspired? Do I want to showcase the talent of this particular Steemian?
If the answer is Yes to any of those questions, I resteem. I consider the posts I resteem as valuable diamonds because I believe sharing them will help others. As I introduce Steem to new people, I find myself saying, “If you really want to know the heartbeat of Steem, read the posts I picked to share on my feed.”
Buried in diamonds.
Yes, my personal posts can seem like they are buried beneath resteems but because I love what I resteem so I’m okay being buried in diamonds. And, in fact, sometimes I post things I know won’t be resteemed like the story of my dog or the eulogy I gave for my dad because I know the blockchain is permanent and it’s something that I want to preserve.
Tech Tip: When I’m looking at someone’s profile with lots of resteems and I only want to just see their posts, I simply go to www.Busy.org, where personal posts and resteems are kept separate.
Know who's supporting you in this special way.
Tech tip: As I was preparing for this post, I discovered a way to pull a report listing my resteemers. Turns out it’s super easy!
- Take the URL for your post… https://steemit.com/health/@karencarrens/i-know-i-m-weird-i-don-t-mind-needles-but-in-this-case-that-s-a-good-thing
- Change the “it” in steemit to “db” so it looks like… https://steemdb.com/health/@karencarrens/i-know-i-m-weird-i-don-t-mind-needles-but-in-this-case-that-s-a-good-thing
- And click”Reblog” to generate your report. Below is an example of the report I pulled.
Shout out time
Ah, my favorite part, shout outs! Here's a big ol’ shout out to all resteemers, thank you for providing “extra lives” to content creators in this pinball game we call STEEM. Wow! Thank you so much @bitcoinparadise for minnowsupport and for the resteem. :) I really enjoyed writing this piece because I absolutely adore the two kids that I got to write about.

That tech tip is so usefull! Thanks :)
That's great! I'm so glad it helped! 🤣
I always hope that others will resteem my post and i do also occasionally resteem other's post.
Yes, it does take time to grow influence, and by the looks of it, you're doing great! Thanks so much for the comment.
My earnings are not that great but i am here for the long term
Yes, stick with it. :) I have so much to learn on blogging. It's all new to me. It's definitely challenging but I love figuring out how to get better results each time. It certainly is a marathon.
I didn't about steemdb - and i've been wondering if such a functionality existed for the last month. Lol - I' came to check you profile :)
LOL Hi again! There's so much we can do and having the right data does help! I am so glad to know about it since there were a couple people weren't even on my radar to thank. So glad you stopped by! )))
Great info for the clueless! (Hmmm... is that a bit to reflective of my own status?)
😂 that's funny! Thanks for the fun pup! Glad you liked it. @re-engineer.
Hi All! It's too late for me to edit my post, but I wanted to give you a post with a different perspective from @steevc but just as important, please scroll down and look at what @jessamynorchard had to say. She came up with a wonderful solution if you want to support others with resteems without getting buried in diamonds (fantastic posts you resteemed).
By the way, thanks to @cryptologyx resteeming, I found this solution by @jessamynorchard. Way to go!
Oh wow...just checking my work and noticed this...thanks so much for the mention...would it be ok if I resteemed your more recent post about resteeming you know...the one you were taking about in this comment...just thought I'd put it here...in case you had forgotten
Of course it's okay. You know what, it really is ironic that the post was about possibly resteeming too much but that is exactly how I saw it, because you cared enough to share. :)
@karencarrens this post...this post...this post is so chock-a-block of priceless gems! It's going to take me days to research all the links...haha with my penchant for surfing other's feeds as well as my own I'll likely lost for the better part what's left of summer...the leaves'll be falling offa me and I'll be bald.
Don't get me wrong, no complaints here. This stuff I embrace now can only make me a better Steemian tomorrow and years from now. I'm just learning to post jump once I land on someone's blog. Kinda how I ended up here...from the post you mentioned in the comments of my earlier post today...or is that yesterday already?
Hahaha...back to the last of your post that put me here...too bad I'm too late to resteem this one...'cause you know I woulda! ~smiles~
EDIT: that's weird...I thought I was already following you...anyway I am now and you know you don't have to follow me if you don't wanna. ;)
For sure I'm following you. Are you kidding?! I love your energy. And, thanks for the feedback. I am so happy you loved me post on the power of a resteem. I'm dancing while I'm typing so it's a little awkward. :)
