Random Japan #57 :: Bicycles As Far As The Eye Can See

in #randomjapan6 years ago

Hello all you wonderful and amazing people, and welcome to another exciting edition of the Internet’s favorite look at the plain and ordinary in the land of advanced robot toilets, Random Japan.

Today, bicycles! And some other stuff too.

Sounds fun? Great. Let’s get started then. Let’s enter into…

Random Japan!

Lots of Bicycles
Lots of Bicycles

Man, that’s a lot of bicycles. This is at a train station. Many people ride bicycles, but even people who do drive cars will often be forced to park far enough from the station that a bicycle from there to the station becomes necessary. The result is what you see. And this is only one of the bicycle parking lots at this station.

I could give you all kinds of info about these stone lanterns, including the names and purposes (there are many many different designs, each with a name and separate purpose). But it’s far better to just admire the simple beauty of it.

Schoolkids Walking
Schoolkids Walking

I’ve mentioned it a few times, but it bears repeating: in Japan all elementary school kids are expected to walk to and from school by themselves, no matter how far away the school is—and it is often up to an hour away. It is not necessarily an exercise in building self-reliance, but on building their relationship with and dependence on each other. The group is everything in Japan, after all.

They are watched by parents who are stationed every block or two along the route and there are plenty of signs marking the way, so they are probably as safe as it gets. They also have to wear bright yellow caps, as you see on this sign, so everyone can instantly identify them.

That’s all folks. I hope you enjoyed at least one of today’s photos. Thank you for reading! And be sure to come back tomorrow when, if providence allows, I shall return for another truly random Random Japan. See you then.

Bicycles everywhere and in shades too.

AWEsome ... .^^.

Luckily for me, the bicyle parking lot next to my station is underground. I'd hate to have my bicycle under the rain the whole day.

That would be nice. Exposure to the elements is definitely one of the negatives to these lots.
