Há muito tempo que estou a tentar partilhar as minhas viagens! Já que "recordar é viver", tento reavivar a minha memória ao rever e escrever sobre os lugares por onde passei. Durante algum tempo tenho estado a selecionar fotos, melhorá-las, pesquisar sobre os locais…

I have been trying to share my travels for a long time! Since "remembering is living", as we say in Portuguese, I try to improve my memory by revisiting the places I have already been. For some time, I have been selecting photos from my personal archive, editing them and looking for more information about the places....

Agosto a Setembro de 2011 | August and September, 2011

Começo com uma fantástica oportunidade que tive de ir trabalhar no Brasil como tradutora. Era um trabalho de campo para uma investigação de uma professora da Universidade de Illinois, Chicago.

I start with an amazing opportunity I had to go to Brazil working as a translator. It was a field research for a teacher at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

A investigação tinha o interesse de perceber como as Comunidades Quilombolas da Bacia e Vale do Iguape estavam a desenvolver-se, tanto a nível de apoios, como na questão da luta por terras próprias. Falarei melhor sobre as comunidades mais para a frente, mas foi espantoso perceber a História destas comunidades, principalmente sendo eu Africana!

The research's goal was to understand how the Quilombolas Community at the Basin and Valley of Iguape River were developing with (or without) government support and during their land property issues. I will talk better about these Communities further on, but it was amazing to learn their History, especially being an African as I am!

Tive a oportunidade de estar uns dias nas cidades de São Paulo e Salvador da Bahia, e na vila de Santiago do Iguape, pertencente ao município de Cachoeira, bem como de visitar as comunidades envolvidas na investigação.

I had the chance to be at Sao Paulo and at Salvador, Bahia, for some days, and we stayed longer at Santiago do Iguape, a village from the Municipality of Cachoeira, as well as visiting each quilombola community involved in the project.

São Paulo (I)

A maior parte do tempo foi ocupada só com trabalho de campo. Num dos dias da estadia em São Paulo, saímos para conhecer um pouco a cidade.

Most of time was field work, but we had some days to explore Sao Paulo.

Catedral de São Paulo | Sao Paulo's Cathedral

É uma Catedral imponente, num largo muito agradável, ladeado de árvores. | A majestic Cathedral on a pleasant square, surrounded by trees.

Pelo que li, é de estilo gótico, das primeiras a serem construídas neste estilo. | From what I read, this Cathedral has a Gothic style and it was one of the first built on this style.

A construção da atual Catedral começou em 1912, mas já em 1598 se iniciou a construção de uma Igreja Matriz da então pequena vila de São Paulo do Campo! | The constructions of the actual Cathedral started in 1912, but in 1598 the small village of Sao Paulo do Campo started building a Mother Church on the same spot.

Os detalhes são sumptuosos e fazem lembrar as belas igrejas portuguesas. | The details are sumptuous and they remind me of the beautiful Portuguese churches.

A Catedral foi edificada a pensar na fartura dos recursos naturais brasileiros. No entanto, a Catedral somente foi inaugurada em 1954 por falta de dinheiro e pelas consequências das duas Grandes Guerras que impediram a importação de materiais. | Despite being built with the intention to show the abundance of the Brazilian natural resources, the Cathedral was inaugurated in 1954 due to money shortage and due to the consequences of the two Great Wars that prevented the import of materials.
