Normalmente quando temos família cá em Portugal connosco, vamos aos locais turísticos próximos e fazemos uma visita guiada à nossa maneira! Foi o que fiz com os meus tios dos Estados Unidos, servi de guia turística em Coimbra :D

Usually when we have family here with us in Portugal, we go to the turistic places near us and do a tour in our way! So, that's what I did with my relatives from the USA, I served as a turistic guide through Coimbra! :D

Arcos do Jardim | The Garden's Arches

Aqueduto de São Sebastião, vulgarmente chamado de Arcos do Jardim pelos habitantes de Coimbra, por estar nas imediações do Jardim Botânico.

Saint Sebastian Aqueduct, usually known as the Garden's Arches by Coimbra's inhabitants because it's right at the surroundings of the Botanical Garden.

Um pouco de História...

Mandado edificar cerca de 1570 por D. Sebastião, com o objectivo de levar a água da Alta da cidade até à colina que se lhe depara defronte, (...), o Aqueduto de São Sebastião estende-se ao longo de um quilómetro, atingindo no seu ponto mais alto treze metros de altura. A robusta edificação é atribuída ao engenheiro Filipe Terzi, que terá aproveitado o traçado já existente de um aqueduto romano para a disposição da estrutura quinhentista. fonte

A little bit of History...

It was built around 1570 by D. Sebastião, with the aim of taking water from the town's high to the hill that lies ahead, (...), the Aqueduct of Saint Sebastian stretches for a kilometer, reaching at its highest point thirteen meters high. The robust building is attributed to the engineer Filipe Terzi, who took advantage of the existing layout of a Roman aqueduct for the layout of the 15th century structure. source

Desta vez, visitámos a parte Alta de Coimbra, a Universidade e os seus caminhos de ruelas e Repúblicas!
This time, we visited the Higher Coimbra, the University and its paths of alleys and Republics (Fraternities)!

Enquanto subíamos para a Universidade, conseguíamos apreciar a vista para a prisão. | While we were walking to the University, we could appreciate this view of the prison.

Pelo que percebi por esta tese, a penitenciária foi construída no local onde estava o Colégio da Ordem de Cristo ou Colégio de Tomar. Foi construída em forma de cruz com uma grande cúpula para lembrar aos presos do peso da vigilância divina!

From what I could understand from this thesis, the prison was built where originally was the College of the Order of Christ or Tomar College. It was built in a cross shape with a huge dome to remind the prisoners of the weight of the divine surveillance!

Chegados à Universidade... | Arriving at the University...

Estátua de D. Dinis, que ordenou a constituição de uma Universidade, "a Universidade mais antiga de Portugal e uma das mais antigas do Mundo", assinando um documento datado de 1290. A Universidade começou a funcionar em Lisboa, sendo transferida definitivamente para Coimbra em 1537. fonte

D. Dinis Statue, who ordered the constitution of a University, "the oldest University in Portugal and one of the oldest in the world", signing a document from 1290. The University started its functions in Lisbon, being transferred definitely to Coimbra in 1537. source

As Escadas Monumentais, com os seus 125 degraus, são uma reconstrução dos anos de 1950 e inspiram muitas lendas entre os estudantes de Coimbra pela dificuldade em subi-las de uma vez! Era este o único acesso à Universidade, mas não consegui encontrar informação de quando é que foram originalmente construídas as antigas "Escadas do Liceu".

The Monumental Staircase, with its 125 steps, are a reconstruction from the 1950 and inspire many legends among the students for the dificulty of climbing them at once! This was the only access to the University, but I couldn't find information about the time when the original "Lyceum Staircase" were built.

A Biblioteca Geral, com início de funções desde antes de 1537. | The General Library, with its beginnings before 1537.

Detalhe de uma Faculdade, creio ser a de Medicina. Parece que já existiria uma Faculdade de Medicina na altura da constituição da própria Universidade, em 1290! O edifício atual foi inaugurado em 1956.

Detail from a Faculty, I believe it's the Medicine Faculty. It seems that even during the constitution of the University itself, in 1290, we already had a Medicine Faculty!

Fachada da Biblioteca Joanina, uma das mais belas do Mundo! Construída entre 1717 e 1728, dantes denominada de Casa da Livraria, passou a chamar-se Biblioteca Joanina em honra de D. João V.

Joanina Library's Facade, one of the most beautiful in the World! It was built between 1717 and 1728, called the Book House, it adopted the name Joanina in honour to King John the Fifth.

Uma cidade cheia de mentes em reboliço tem que ter mensagens marcantes! | A city full of rustled minds has to have sharp messages!

Novamente cá em baixo, a caminho de outros destinos, uma parede cheia de azulejos com os monumentos mais importantes de Coimbra. Fica aqui uma amostra!

Once in the downtown, on our way to other destinations, a wall full of blue tiles with the most important Coimbra's monuments. Here's just a sample!
