Mini Motivation #67 - It's OK to "Withdraw" from Your Network
One thing my Ma always taught me, was to add value to people whenever possible, and it helps because mentor and coaches have pinpointed my strengths early on in my career - problem-solving, expanding options, connecting dots etc. Although it's not always a hit, but I always make it a point to leave any encounters with the other party feeling better than when the meeting started, either with the having more options, seeing things from another perspective, or having their problem solved.
And then, there were points in my life that I ran into troubles myself, and I tried to solve the problems on my own, only to fail.
It was during one of those down times that one of my coaches, Dave Rogers, pointed out something really significant in my life, something that redefined my approach to problem-solving and network building.
"Mav, you've been adding value to others around you. That's like depositing in your network, which is great. But you do know it's ok to withdraw from the network once in a while, right? Won't it be peculiar for you to deposit in a bank account all the time and not take the money when you really need it?
"And have you thought that perhaps your network wants to help you, but they can't because they don't know how and you didn't reach out to them? Don't you think that's selfish?"
Frankly, I never looked at it that way before, that not opening up to seek for help could be considered selfish. But after much thought, I know what Dave said was right. As long as the ask for help is genuine, and not for the lack for trying, or tapping into my own resources to solve it first, then it's highly encouraged.
So the next time when you're stuck, remember, it's ok to reach out and ask for help. As long as you've attempted to solve the problem on your own and not getting the results you expected, then it's not a sign of weakness or taking advantage of others. It's just you withdrawing from the relationship accounts you've built over the years.
What do you think, though? Is it selfish when you always help others but don't give them chance to help you in return?
Mini Motivation is my own daily strategy to inspire myself. Mostly 3 minute reads.
From Motivation, we gain Inspiration. From Inspiration, we achieve Momentum. And the rest, they say, is history.
Hope it helps nudge you a bit too in the right direction.
Oh it did? Let me know in the comments, and of course an upvote would be a nice motivation for me. :)
Stay awesome!

Wait, why's Mav posting on Steemit nowadays?
Well, unlike other blogging and social media platform, Steemit is the only platform that allows me to earn cryptocurrency when I engage with it. Yup, one Steem is about USD5, and you, too, can earn Steem Dollars every time you:
- Create content (articles, blog posts, podcasts, videos, photos)
- Upvote (like) other people contents
- Comment on other people's posts
- Have discussions, share opinions etc!
Yup, basically it's the very same thing you're doing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc all along!
The only difference? For once you can earn a nice income on the side!
Sign up for a free Steemit account, and you can thank me by coming back and upvoting this article. And guess what, you will earn Steem too for doing that! #awesome
This is a different way of looking at it, which I think is a good angle to look at. Maybe it's not about being selfish everytime you don't reach out for help but that could also be one reason. There are a lot of factors to consider like trust issues etc, I just never thought about this point of view before.
Good post! It made me think. I love hearing/reading about different perspectives because it expands my awareness and stretches my limitations.
I agree on trust issues, especially when it had been exploited in the past. Still, I believe that humanity is still fundamentally good, and just like how I like to have a second chance at failed attempts and foolish endeacvours, I think others would appreciate the same too.
I did have first hand experience on being exploited but still I agree on the belief that there is good in humanity.
Love it - as usual. We givers do need a personal timeout session too for sure hey.
That's what the bench is for - catch the breath, loosen the muscle, see the game from a more dissociated view. And that's usually when clarity sneaks in. :)
This is food for thought. We won't think you are selfish as one needs to help themselves to help others too! It's also knowing that help is there that is difficult as you might not know who to ask. Thanks for this post! Hope you are well! 😊

I'm good; always had been blessed with good friends and great wisdom.
You have a good circle of friends 😊 Support is key and that's great that you can rely on the people around you for it.
I think helping people is helping yourself and as my experience showed me is that when you really need help you will get it, more than you expect.
Yeah, life does work in mysteriois ways!
Hmm.. to be fair I guess one should always deposit first into the relationship before they withdraw.. Or else you'll end up with a bad credit, in which I believe a lot of people are having (which is why they always ask for help yet they don't receive any)
Yeah, of course. Hence give and take. Or rather give and pay-it-forward. What goes around comes around anyway.
Really enjoy your posts!
