Impressions of H O N G K O N G (Part4)

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

This is PART 4 of a series of photos I put together to give you an impression of the great variety of landscapes and experiences Hong Kong has to offer.

You can read the introductory blog to this series, the second part, and the third part to get a better idea of what my vision of Hong Kong is all about.

I hope this collection of photos awakens memories/emotions of former travels you may have had in Asia or other, or simply gives you the desire to get out there and discover more of what the Earth has to offer.

Where's Waldo?

Flowers.jpg

These are Bauhinia flowers - widely planted in Hong Kong and also featured on its flag. The Bauhinia blakeana (Hong Kong Orchid Tree) was discovered in 1908 in Pok Fu Lam. It is among the finest of the Bauhinia genus anywhere in the world.

CheungChau3.jpg

A view of the picturesque harbour in Cheung Chau island, a 40-minute to an hour ferry ride away from HK's city center. Fishing boats and small pleasure crafts can be observed from the waterfront promenade where cafes, seafood restaurants, and dried food stalls welcome all visitors to the island.

Buddha.jpg

This bronze Buddha has had its fair share of @bellyrub's! According to a popular Chinese superstition and folklore, Budai was a jolly Buddhist monk who distributed goods to children. Admired for his happiness, plenitude, and wisdom of contentment, it is believed that rubbing his belly brings wealth, good luck, and prosperity.

Bird.jpg

A man covers his face to protect himself from the busy and polluted streets of Hong Kong. He is on his way to the park to "walk" his birds. See Part 2 of this series for more details on this intriguing tradition.

Bells.jpg

Wishing Bells displaying hundreds of people's prayers and wishes - they can be found hanging in the gardens of Wong Tai Sin Temple, an important religious center, home to 3 different religions/philosophies: Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism.

HighRise.jpg

Something I often found myself doing in Hong Kong: looking upwards :)

JunkBoat.jpg

View of Hong Kong's city center also called Central, with one of the few remaining Junk boat (or Sampan) sailing in the foreground. The photo is taken from the other side of Victoria Harbour - Kowloon side - where, every night, tourists gather to watch a Light and Sound show called "Symphony of Lights". Named the 'World's Largest Permanent Light and Sound Show' by Guinness World Records, it involves more than 40 buildings on both sides of the harbour and is, to me, a must-do on your first night in HK. They have added a very cool component to this experience by broadcasting the show's music and narration on the radio (easily used on any phone), thus giving people the opportunity to hang out at a restaurant terrace/bar, or find a secret spot away from all the tourists to enjoy the experience while sipping on a glass of wine :)

Forest1.jpg

The sunlight piercing through the densely overgrown forest found on the upper parts of Hong Kong island. Bowen road (more like a path than a road) stretches over 4km from Mid-levels to Happy Valley - flat, paved, and shaded from the hot HK sun, with beautiful views of the urban jungle down below. One of my favourite Sunday city hikes.

Resto.jpg

Seafood restaurant famous for its spicy chilli crab, a Hong Kong specialty. The photos seen below the window are a common sight here - enticing walkers by displaying pictures of the chef/owner of the establishment posing alongside the rich and famous. I guess this works.

BambooDoodles1.jpg

And some bamboo doodles to finish with. I still have no idea what is written... to my great despair :(

Honestly, you don't even have to write, your photos speak a thousand words! I love the sentiment behind the Wishing Bells, just beautiful. Much love, @sweetpea

Thank you so much @sweetpea. I initially wanted to share my photos without sharing much info as I don't automatically have words to associate with what I capture, but it doesn't really "work" that way here on Steemit. The only form of expression which gets any substantial attention is writing... makes me a bit sad for all these people out there who don't express themselves and share their personal vision of the world necessarily through words. They can easily get discouraged... and steemit loses a lot of amazing talents. We all express ourselves in different ways, whether it be painting, drawing, writing, photography, singing... and that's the beauty of our societies.
Not feeling very positive lately so your comment is a lovely boost, and I thank you for that.

Ah I hope you cheer up soon, lots to be positive about in our somewhat ruthless world! I get what you are saying, we scour Steemit looking for bulky content, the images are often there simply for the pretty colours. But, I have also seen many artists on this platform who get recognition simply for displaying their art, so it is possible (maybe a bit harder for photography). I am really enjoying my "visit" to Hong Kong through your lens, do you have another city in store for us any time soon?

That's true. It just takes so much more perseverance. And yes, even more so in photography.
I do plan on continuing my #facesandplaces posts, with Faces of people from around the world. And maybe more travel posts from Borneo, Thailand, America, Peru, France...

YeeehaaAAaAAaww!!

I'm very much enjoying reading your HK travel posts @osm0sis.

Glad you enjoy them... it feels like not many people do. I'm really doubting this whole travel post thing.

Really? That's a shame. We enjoy seeing them pop up on steemit worldmap, for deciding on what goes into the daily travel digest.

Yes and I'm super glad you guys are here for that :)

I love the first picture ! Thank you to share your story travel :)

Thanks Maeva. Happy to bring you along :)

I lived in Hong Kong for seven years and your photos just took me right back. Taking the Star Ferry across the harbour, walking Bowen Road (and Lugard Road!) around midlevels and the peak, smelling roast duck from the restaurants in causeway bay and wandering around wan chai at night... It's a wonderful but CRAZY place.

Lugard Road!! That's what the name of that path is! I've been trying to remember (without Google's help) for days. Absolutely brilliant walk around the Peak, especially more so at night. Thanks for that @ausxen. Lovely to meet a fellow HK ex-expat :) Where are you living now?

C'etait bien?! Jerry vous a fait son one-man-show? ;-)

p.s. je suis en train de faire mon premier post sur SteemFest et ...clairement, j'ai mentioné toi aussi ;)

T'es trop chou. Ca me fait super plaisir <3

oui haha Jerry était très mignon,sa première fois apparament!!!
Eh beh oui je comprends, pas trop de temps non plus pour des photos...mais je commence avec mes post bientôt!
Gros bisous!!!

Thanks for this series, I really liked to read it and to look at your photos. I've been to Hong Kong a few times and posted once about it (https://steemit.com/travel/@johannvdwalt/happy-chinese-new-year-2017) and you inspired me to show more of my travels in Hong Kong!

Happy to hear that :) I look forward to checking out your next posts about HK (and others). Your photos are beautiful! I was jst as excited as you about capturing some good shots of the fireworks, but never really succeeded in getting anything worth showing... Either too windy, too crowded, too mesmerized! Cheers @ johannvdwalt!

You really do have some lovely photos to share. It is a little heart-breaking spending a lot of time and sharing photos close to you, when they aren't viewed or rewarded in comparison to others on Steemit.

It's the game, not you or the pictures. Photography is a difficult niche with a blog a minute arriving on the Blockchain.

I much prefer to read a little about a photo, and see a small collection like this.

Thanks for sharing and please continue!

158 views on the last post... They are viewed enough for my liking, i have the exposure boosts - thanks to many great people. So, viewed but rarely upvoted..not a very good sign

I wonder how many of those are unique. I'm not convinced the eyeball count doesn't increase when you look each day.

And If I've looked via Steem, Busy, Chainbb, on my PC and phone, that will definitely be 6 views.

I re-steemed so you will get at least 1 more view! :)

Well quit lookin'! So i can get an accurate idea of all this.
Thanks for the resteem. BRING ON THE VIEWS! (and the depression)

The best way to get over a low paying blog is to create another blog, then you have a small window of hope :D
