My Top Ten - If You Thought You Might Be Stranded On A Desert Island, What Would You Take For Entertainment?

in #life6 years ago (edited)

If you thought you might be stranded on a desert island and could only take 10 items, which would you choose? If books, no Amazon Kindle, these would be analog reading material. Let's assume food and water is available, but not power, we just need something to occupy our minds. As they say on Shark Tank, "What are you going to do?"

In no particular order, here are my top 10 books to take:

  • The Encyclopedia of Dead Rock Stars: Heroin, Handguns, and Ham Sandwiches - by Jeremy Simmonds - I remember trying to glance through this huge book at a Borders and was amazed to find out what really happened to Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. Tons of stuff you may never have heard of. You'll take this to the bathroom with you.

  • The Genesis 6 Conspiracy: How Secret Societies and the Descendants of Giants Plan to Enslave Humankind - by Gary Wayne - Over 800 pages of compelling text. You know that part of The Bible that talks about Giants? Well, this book dives deep into all of that pre-history. Conspiracy-type folks will be in instant bliss (and need to clean up afterwards) after reading this book.

  • The Holy Bible, Old King James Version - I include the old version as I love the flowery medieval language used here. It forced me to put in a little work trying to translate the old English into today’s lexicon. Everyone should have one of these. See Genesis 6 about above-said Giants.

  • Who Killed Kurt Cobain? The Mysterious Death of an Icon - by Ian Halperin and Max Wallace - I don't know what your opinion is about Kurt's passing, but this book might just change it. You know that old phrase "follow the money?" just sayin. This young man had a lot to live for and was about to start working on the next Nirvana album in August of that year, with a brand-new sound. What happened?

  • Who Killed John Lennon? - By Fenton Bresler - I guess we're seeing a pattern here. This one is hard to find now. What really happened on the night of Monday, December 8, 1980? Get a slice of what the author thinks in this page-turner about a man of peace, cut down in the prime of his life. Oh, and his killer: Mark David Chapman is up for parole again this year...

  • The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever - by Stephen R. Donaldson - I came across this series of 10 books (but we're only counting them as one) and am very glad that I did. This has been called a modern-day middle-earth, with Donaldson being favorably compared to Tolkien. Don't walk, run to get these books. J. R. R. Tolkien be dammed. :)

  • The Bachman Books: Rage / The Long Walk / Roadwork / The Running Man - by Richard Bachman (Stephen King) - King wrote these short stories under a pen name to see if they would find an audience without using his own famous name. The Long Walk is an absolute standout, you won't be able to put it down without finishing it.

  • Rich Dad Poor Dad: What The Rich Teach Their Kids About Money - That The Poor And Middle Class Do Not! - By Robert Kiyosaki - If I were King of America, I would make this book required reading for kids and adults. Rich Dad gives us a peek behind the curtain at how finance and money really work. If you want to become successful in life, this book will give you the tools to help you on your journey. Highly recommended.

  • The Richest Man in Babylon - by George S. Clason - A companion to Rich Dad above, with very wise examples of money management. Another book kids should read, to help ease their pathway to success. You will learn valuable life lessons from this book. Don't hesitate, just get it, you'll thank me later.

  • Theodora and the Emperor - by Harold Lamb - If you thought Cleopatra was something, you don't know Theo! I have read this book about how a young, um, "lady" became the empress of Byzantium - by sleeping her way to the top. Some say that Angelina Jolie was born to play Cleopatra. NOPE. She is the only person I can imagine playing evil Theodora.
Did you see Angie in Wanted here was an amazing woman, that had guts and was the real power behind the throne. In some ways, she was more of a man than her own husband was. I was talking about Theodora and Justinian, not Angie and Brad. But then again... ;)

These books should keep you busy while you wait for your ship to come in... Did I leave anything out? What would YOU take?

I'll one-up your suggestion and add a parallel Bible with at least 4 translations. Ideally, it would also include the Apocrypha.

The complete works of Plato would be a superb way to keep my mind occupied.

Human Action, by Ludwig von Mises.

The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion. There is a very good reason these books remain popular.

Hi Jacob! I never heard of a parallel Bible, interesting. I almost included The Book of Enoch so I'm with you there. I'll have to check out that economics book. Have you read Donaldson? good stuff. Would you believe I have never read the LOTR books? (I saw the movies) and I have never seen Star Wars Just that Phantom Menance one, which everybody hated, but I liked. :)
