Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch is almost on the doorstep. This giant Mario adventure promises to be the fighter of this fall.

You'd think that after all those years of adventure, Mario has seen the whole universe. Literally even in Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 . But nothing is less true, because in Super Mario Odyssey our circumcised plumber on world trip may be his biggest adventure ever!

Wedding Crasher

In Super Mario Odyssey , Bowser finally tries to win Princess Peach for herself by marrying her. Mario obviously needs nothing and does everything to release Peach. Unfortunately, Bowser has the force of force this time and throws Mario out of his flying ship, and Peach is still aboard.

Fortunately, Mario is once again strengthened by a brand new character named Cappy to be the savior in need. With this hat with eyes, Mario can carry out all kinds of new moves. Mario can throw Cappy all the way to hit objects and enemies. Cappy can even be used as a platform to jump!

But Cappy still has a special skill and that's his biggest: the capture ability. When Mario Cappy throws into an object, character or enemy that does not wear a headgear, Mario takes shape. This is truly a fantastic new skill that creates a crazy new gameplay experience that is very familiar at the same time.

Hat off

The capture skill creates a new way to solve puzzles and explore the game world. A nice example is that Mario can jump through a platform to bridge a lava lake.

This is something we've been doing for Mario for about 30 years, but in Super Mario Odyssey , it's possible to take a Lava Bubble's shape with the capture skill and just swim across the lava to the other side. Both ways are correct, but at least we know which one is the nicer of the two.

And yet, the capture skill feels familiar. Super Mario Odyssey is full of all kinds of enemies, including many old acquaintances. It's fantastic to finally walk around like a Goomba. Mario fans will soon also have the patterns of enemy attacks, and know what fears they can all take after taking over a shape.

The wide world in

During our play session with Super Mario Odyssey, we were given the opportunity to try out three different Kingdoms; Cap Kingdom, Luncheon Kingdom and Seaside Kingdom. Each kingdom is also inhabited by another kind of life form.

Cap Kingdom is a world of magic that is heavily affected by an attack by Bowser. In Cap Kingdom Mario is playing playfully all gameplay mechanics.

Luncheon Kingdom is a beautiful colorful kingdom full of all kinds of food. In the middle of the Luncheon Kingdom is a huge active volcano on which a large pan can be cooked. The area itself is sown with boiling tomato soup which does not do too much like lava. It's a bizarre whole to see and even stranger to pass through.

Finally, Seaside Kingdom is a gigantic tropical spot in which the player can run and swim endlessly. By taking over the shape of a Cheep Cheep, Mario also swims twice as fast!

Maantjes in all corners and holes

All the Kingdoms we've played so far feel gigantic. The way you explore the Kingdoms differs from level to level. New Donk City and Seaside Kingdom are giant open spaces in which the player is free to explore while Luncheon Kingdom follows a more straight path that further develops as you achieve certain goals.

What all Kingdoms do in common is that they are all full of mystery areas and many other surprises. The game therefore invites you to explore the levels. Mario's goal in Super Mario Odyssey is to collect as many Power Moons as possible so that his ship's Odyssey has enough power to reach Bowser's location.

Super Mario Odyssey has a lot of power moons to collect, really a lot. Fortunately, the game clearly shows what Power Moons you already have, and how much you still need. Some Power Moons are clearly portrayed by the game and will find you by yourself following the landmark of a Kingdom. But countless Power Moons are well hidden in all corners and holes of the Kingdoms and require the player to really search.

Like a real world traveler, Mario can now also score a matching outfit for each Kingdom. These you buy in souvenir shops with old trusted Mario coins or local currency. This currency is purple and has a different matching shape in each Kingdom. The outfits you can score for Mario are fantastic and refer to games from the history of the series.

Super Mario Odyssey promised to be a big-minded adventure. The return to open worlds full of exploring and collecting possibilities is highly reminiscent of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. That's more than welcome and feels better than ever in Super Mario Odyssey.

Never before, Mario felt so athletic and the game worlds were so filled with everything for the player to discover. For that matter, hats down to Nintendo. We were all already positive about Super Mario Odyssey, but our desire has only been enhanced by the play session. Is it October 27th? Come on with Super Mario Odyssey!

Mario is about to go on his biggest adventure to date! Super Mario Odyssey will be in the stores from October 27th.

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
